Posted June 29, 201212 yr Hi guys My 3 year old budgie had to be put to sleep last week :-(( Initially I said No more, but after only a few days I have found the house way too quiet with only a female cockatiel (who only loves my husband anyway the little tart lol) I have scrubbed Dash' cage really well as the vet still suspects he had mega bacteria but even if it was something else, I wanted to make sure that the cage was cleaned thoroughly. My question is, how will I know that what I have done is enough if you get what I mean?? I want to bring home a new budgie very soon but I do not want to risk any viruses or bacteria potentially still being present in that cage :-((
June 29, 201212 yr Hello Provided you used plenty of disinfectant. Stripped it into various parts & left it out for the sunshine to kill off any little nasty. It should be okay. Just make absolutely sure new bird is healthy.. The longer it takes you to choose another bird the better. Yours B.J.
June 30, 201212 yr Author Hmmm to easy my conscience I decided to put the whole cage in the bath tub and let it soak in hot water with lots of a.c.v. lol Will put it out in the sun in a few hours which I had also done already but just do not want to take any risks. Thanks Bird Junky
July 6, 201212 yr It sounds to me like you've got it covered, between the bleach, the ACV, and the sun. For my cages, I'm usually pretty comfortable with a thorough wetting with bleach solution that I let soak for 10 or 20 minutes. Let it dry in the sun, and it's good to go.
