Feeding Budgies Cheese

Featured Replies

Hi

I have been asked whether it is okay to feed a budgie cheese. She feeds her budgie cheese and says it hasn't made any difference to his poops. I would have thought that it might have given him the runs but she says there is no problem.

She wants an answer, what does everyone think? Thanks.

The general consensus of opinion seems to be that birds are lactose intolerant therefore most people would not be feeding cheese.

Hi Lactose free Cottage Cheese is the only one considered safe for birds.

Just because no bad symptoms have shown yet. It's the long term effects,

like life shortening that you have to think about. Yours B.J

I don't see much point in giving budgies cheese which they were not intended to eat in the first place. You saw what happened when they fed meat to cows. There are plenty of other options when it comes to calcium. Besides, lactase, the enzyme which bird do not produce is used to break down the lactose (into glucose and galactose monosaccharides, simple sugars which can more easily be digested) in the dairy product, and some highly intolerant lactose people still cannot drink it. There are a lot of reports of people having problems with lactose free milk or with lactaid pills, so like one of the intolerant ladies said, Don't fight what your body tells you and their bodies say no to dairy.

Although you see Cat's drink milk, you don't do it, because they can't digest it... almost the same with birds and cheese, they can digest it, but not very well
