Hi,

I have an aviary with about 20 budgies and they have caught some kind of disease, I am not sure what it is. They have diarrhea and end up dying in around 1-2 days of being sick. The aviary has a grass floor, i gave them some vetafarm cocci vet and that cured them after several had died. I thought i had gotten rid of the disease because they all came better but now they are looking sick and have diarrhea again, I have separated the few from the rest of the colony and put them in a nice warm room. What could it be and whats the best way to stop it?

Hi lover. I would hazard a guess its the source of the problem you have

to deal with . Empty the aviary & give it a good clean out with disinfectant.

Remove the top soil & replace with fresh. Clean all item used even your

shoes. Then only return birds that are well. A sick bird can reinfect the

You can use coccivet of course as it seemed you had coccidiosis going through. What you neglected to do it seems is fully clean the aviary. The occysts stay active in the aviary and the birds reinfected from that.

When the disease hit i placed all the healthy budgies in a new aviary that had never had any birds in there and I disinfected all the objects from the old cage, but now the disease has hit again. I have separated the sick budgies and put them in a small cage in a warm room to get better. I was reading that budgies that eat seed off the ground that has been wet from rain and damp soil can make them sick, is this right?

H Not unless it was mouldy old seed. Seed falling on damp soil under normal circumstances

would sprout. Soil in an aviary is soon contaminated especially under perches.

You would be better off with paving or concrete That can be cleaned at least weekly.

Seed is best confined to a feeding station with trays to collect husks, dropped seed etc,

Time to get a concrete base to the aviary not soil floor and stop all damp getting in as well as reassessing the feeding areas and removal of waste from floors. Best when cocci rears its ugly head is to bring birds inside in cages with warm lamps while treating with meds and not be too quick to have them battle more cold and damp till truly over it and fully fit

Hope things improve for you soon. Even though you put the "healthy" birds in new cage, they may still have been infected but not shown it until later.

Touch wood !!! I have never had this infection and hope I never do, sounds devastating.

Get a few of the birds into a show cage for example with white paper on the floor,and then take the droppings down to the vet to get analyzed instead of playing the guessing game.You should do this on a regular basis,i have just had my birds droppings tested and the vet charged me $15.00 so it's not expensive.

Thanks for the advice all, They seem to be getting better but I'll still keep them in a warm room for a while.
