Posted June 23, 201213 yr Hi all, Paired these two who had 9 chicks one of which is Albino. Trying to grasp mutations, I thought that as hens can't be split for sex linked mutations, which my info says Albino's are, am I right to think the Albino must be from Cock being split Albino. Could he throw an albino with any other hen? If this is right. They have gone on to a 9 chicks 2nd round. No albino's this round though.
June 23, 201213 yr Yes Robyn you are correct. This cock is split Ino, you got an albino chick because he is paired to a blue series hen, if paired to a green series hen , you would get lutino and if green bird is split blue you could still possibly get albino. All ino's from these pairings would be hens. As with all sexlinked mutations you need the mutation on both sides of pairing to breed visual cockbirds.
June 24, 201213 yr Author Thank's B.H.D. So that means my Albino is a hen. Finally got one worked out.
July 6, 201212 yr I think it's quite interesting that out of 18 chicks, you only got one ino. It just goes to show that even though we talk about percentages, the numbers will be off when we just look at one or two clutches. If you only had the second round of 9 chicks, with no inos among them, most people would feel pretty comfortable assuming that the cock wasn't split to ino. Or for an example, I have a cock who had 10 chicks with a recessive pied hen, and none of them came out recessive pied. So I feel that the cock must not be split to it. But of course, it doesn't prove it, and if they had had 18 chicks, maybe one would have popped out. You're pretty lucky, in that at least now you know for sure your cock is split to ino.
July 7, 201212 yr Author This fellow is also split cinn. as he has some sky blue cinn. in clutch. ( 2 in last clutch.) plus pied, 1 spangle and normals.
July 7, 201212 yr Ooo, split to ino and split to cinnamon! That means that when his sperm is produced, there is a small chance (I think it's around 3% or so) that a crossover will occur, and make a lacewing gene, which is where the ino and the cinnamon are on the same X chromosome. (Right now you have proof that his ino gene is on one of his Xs and his cinnamon gene is on the other, because they showed up on two separate chicks, not the same chick.) If you were interested in breeding lacewings, then putting him with a cinnamon hen or an ino hen would increase the chances of combining the two genes someday. Something else just ocurred to me as I was typing this. If one of his Xs has the ino, and the other has the cinnamon, then all his hen chicks would be one or the other (barring the slight chance of crossover). So do you think that all of the remaining chicks out of the 18 are all boys?
July 7, 201212 yr Author This is all a bit out of my league Finnie, I have copied your last comments for future ref. I know his cinn are all hens as they are visible cinn. I would have to check first clutch, I did on sell some of them because they were all cocks, I am short of hens. Well I was now I know I have at least 5 sky cinn's. I'll try to add this last clutch pics onto my post on first clutch pics. To try for the lace wing gene? would it matter if it was cinn green series or blue cinn?
July 7, 201212 yr Author 2 I think . This round, you will have to tell me Kaz. l.o.l Just posted pics of 2nd round under "My new Chicks" in budgie pics. after a lot of bother with p.b. (not brilliant pics.) some not fledged yet.
July 19, 201212 yr Really nice combo of babies. That's the fun part of breeding budgies in my opinion. Bred a grey dommie (told she was violet grey but who would know by looking) to a sky blue cock and got, grey norms, grey violet norms, cobalt norms, violet norms, grey doms, violet grey doms, skyblue norm and a cute little cinnamon opaline sky dom (over 2 rounds) ....... mix and match babies The things that come out of the breedings as a surprise are the thing that makes it interesting!
July 20, 201212 yr Author I think so as well Nubbly, I love to see what the little ones develop into, especially when you don"t know what the parents are split too
July 21, 201212 yr Did you get any dommie pieds out of him ? When I read this, I looked back up at his photo to see his dom pied, and do I also see that he is spangle? I just read your new chicks post, but had forgotten about this one, so I'll have to go back now and check out your baby pics again!
July 23, 201212 yr Yes Finnie, definately spangle. Lol, and I also noticed spangle chicks in the other thread.
