Posted June 20, 201213 yr Yesterday I went into a stockfeed place here that also sells Teils,Canarys,Finches and Budgies, they are housed outside in flight cages. While I was looking at the budgies they had I noticed in the corner was a small baby budgie,he looked very sick and fluffed up,I also noticed he had a very messy vent,I asked the owner about the sick budgie and got a very rude reply, she said that I dont know what I am talking about and that hes perfectly fine and only fluffed up with messy vent as hes still a baby. I cant stop thinking about the poor little fella out there in the cold
June 20, 201213 yr It will be dead tomorrow or shortly after if they dont try and sell the cute fluffy one to some unsuspecting customer..................typical of such places to fob off good information. Its designed to shut you up so noone overhears the conversation. I have experienced such things ( Picton ) and have never set foot in that door ever again due to rudeness and lack of action for their birds. :(
June 20, 201213 yr I agree with Kaz, and whatever you do, DON'T be tempted to go back and buy it to save its life. That just teaches the store that sick budgies sell better than healthy ones.
June 21, 201213 yr Author I was tempted to buy the poor little fella while I was in there but turned my back on him,I felt so bad but know there is really not much I could have done. the petshops here are horrible and I hate going in to them as I am always tempted to come home with some poor sick animal
June 22, 201213 yr Why not report them to the relevent authority in your town, e.g. r.s.p.c.a and get them to check out the store?
June 23, 201213 yr Author I have reported them but the rspca here said they cant really do much about it,they can go check the place out but aslong as the birds have fresh water and seed then they cant do anything unless the sick bird is still there then they can seize him but I very much doubt he would still be alive with the condition he was in
June 24, 201213 yr Well at least you tried, that's all you can do really. Good on you for reporting it anyway, somebody may decide to keep an eye out in the future.
June 24, 201213 yr RSPCA is really a toothless tiger. There was puppies in a petshop recently ...........only 3-4 wks old and the staff were telling customers they were 7-8 wks old. RSPCA wouldnt respond and said it was a commerce problem. They pups were taken into rescue by concerned citizens. They had bellies full of worms so bad they couldnt poop them out.
June 24, 201213 yr Poor bird..... It's kinda funny in a very sad and sick way, the City farmers only a 5 minute bike ride from where I live, stocks perfectly good birds (although they don't really sell many, they're just handtamed and usually only two or three in the shop at any given time)... in fact, they're likely to never get sick in the shop! Across the road, there is a XXXX (I think it's an offbrancher of City farmers?) and their birds are in terrible condition! Not once have I seen a clean cage, in fact, not once have I see a spot in the cage that's not covered in poop! Their birds are likely to die in a week of the buyer buying them The only reason I go to XXXX is for the bird toys, because they have a massive section for bird toys Edited June 24, 201213 yr by **KAZ** removed name due to negative connotations expressed
July 6, 201212 yr Well, people vote with their dollars, and if you buy anything at all from a store like XXXX, then you are encouraging them to keep up their poor habits.
July 7, 201212 yr I have warned them that if I don't see clean cages by next week, they will be reported for inproper animal housing, and my parent's have two friends that'll be extremely useful... they say that they could help me and make XXXX a supply only shop and prohibited from selling animals of any kind I told them that in their warning
July 16, 201212 yr I just cannot believe that the RSPCA would turn their back on what is, bird cruelty. Very disappointed to hear that. I can't cop any form of animal / bird cruelty. These poor creatures can't fend for themselves. How sad it all is.
July 16, 201212 yr Maddie, they've grown on a pretty false reputation really, although i suppose it is sort of understandable, they rely on donations, and it's probably easier and cheaper to get a dog in... really they should be funded by the government as well as donations :/
April 15, 201312 yr hey guys, im new here and i would like to point out that brookfield produce in brisbane, brookfield, is a really bad place to go for budgies! i bought the best looking one.... but she had mites on her face!!! so i had to keep her away from dj my other budgie while the disapered!!
