Posted June 18, 201212 yr My budgie is doing really well. He's been happy chattering away and oh my poor ears. Today i went shopping at my local pet shop "crystals pet shop " in rooty hill. Only found out that they have an amazing selection of seeds which they sell in 1kg bags. Will be great for me to mix. I will be following this seed mix which was posted on another thread. 50% Canary 15% Jap 15% White French 10% Panorama 10% Red Panican Is there anything else i can add to this seed mix. I also got a mineral block and cuttle fish bone for my baby. Whats the difference between both? I have been feeding Chickoo the Trill Budgie seeds and am now looking at switching over to my own seed mix. I am also thinking of giving him one serve of Vetafarm pellets daily. Apart from seeds chickoo hasn't been eating anything else. Very little fruits or veges, egg shell , boiled eggs etc. He's probably peck at them but will tend to get frustrated. It seem he doen't know how to eat them. He'll just roll these around in he's beak and drop it. Some advice from you lovely experienced folks would keep him healthy.

Millet & Canary seed are the staple diet of the pet budgie. All the other seeds are supposed to promote extra health & vigour in breeding birds etc. Cuttle bone is pure calcium. The mineral block has a mix. Use both so your bird can choose what minerals he requires I have been feeding Chickoo the Trill Budgie seeds and am now looking at switching over to my own seed mix. I am also thinking of giving him one serve of Vetafarm pellets daily. The Trill seed mix is designed to give your bird all the seed it requires. Unless you are a Dietician I would stick with the experts. Pellets. Don't waste your money. Apart from seeds chickoo hasn't been eating anything else. Persevere with the fruit/veg egg food etc. Young birds are like children, try chopping the egg. shell & a little piece of either fruit/veg in a mixer. They need a variety of vitamins etc. that they can't get from seed. Some advice from you lovely experienced folks would keep him healthy. Yours B.J. Edited June 18, 201212 yr by Bird Junky
June 19, 201212 yr Hmmmm.... let's see if I can remember what I give my birds I put hardboiled egg (with shell), wholegrain pasta (i like the one that looks like yellow rice), veggies, some pellets, some seeds, veggies, raw pistachios and anything else that I can find in the fridge that's edible for them They really love it... I make weekly batches and use a food saver to make sure it doesn't spoil...
June 20, 201212 yr Author So should i stick with the trill mix or can i use the seed mix i posted above. Someone told me not to buy supermarket stuff bcos they aren't fresh and that's why i wanted to replace the Trill mix.
June 21, 201212 yr I did a quick google search and i found a site that says to use 40% Canary seed, 50% millet (Mixture of white, panicum, japanese and yellow) and 10% whole oats... Not sure if it's balanced, but it seems okay to me
June 21, 201212 yr If you do a search of the forum, I'm sure you will find topics where other people have suggested what seeds they prefer in a mix. I ditched the parakeet mixes a couple of years ago, based on discussions we were having where people told what seeds they liked best. And based on some suggestions by Generic Blue, I found that my local seed company's "Finch Mix" and "Canary Mix" had more types of seeds and less junk than their "Parakeet" mix. I would like to tweak my seed mix even further, and if I had a source to get seeds individually, I would really like that. Perhaps since your birds are doing well on the Trill mix, you could read the label of it, and try to duplicate what they use. Since your main concern seems to be the freshness of the seed, not neccessarily that the Trill blend is incorrect. Or you also have the option of keeping the seeds separate, and feeding them in individual cups, which might give you an idea of which ones the birds prefer, and which ones they waste. You can "balance" your seed mix all you want, but it won't really help once the birds "unbalance" it, by only picking and eating their favorites.
June 22, 201212 yr I did a quick google search and i found a site that says to use 40% Canary seed, 50% millet (Mixture of white, panicum, japanese and yellow) and 10% whole oats... Not sure if it's balanced, but it seems okay to me The whole oats content of this indicates it is whats called a budgie mix not a premium budgie blend. Best you only give oats in winter when its real cold. and flip....if you look here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=29023 you wont need to do google searches...always check the forum first.
