Posted March 4, 200421 yr Gidday everyone, I have just purchased my first Budgie, he is a Cobult and seems quite happy running around the cage. I have had him for a week now and talk to him every time I walk past, he appears to be more active when I am out of the room, I can hear him spinning on his toys and chirping away. I believe this is a good sign? I want to train him but am unsure how to start, I change his feed and water daily when I clean his bottom tray. When I put my hand into his cage, I do it very slowly and never towards him, he just drops to the bottom of the cage and hides in the corner, he looks really scared, I walk away and leave him for a while, just checking on him, it takes a long time for him to get back on his perches and chirp after this. One thing I have seen him do, daily he hopes into his food bowl which has a cover, he stands in there and scoops out all his seed and lays in there, I guess he wants the protection of is still very young, his cage and my table is always covered in seed when I come home from work, why is he doing this? I am after as much advice and help. Hopefully you guys will be able to provide guidance on how to train Jacko, I would like him to be a companion and a buddy, i have seen many photo's of budgies siting on shoulders and being friendly like that, that $ what I am after.
March 4, 200421 yr am sorry to tell you that some budgies just can not be tamed take my hen for example, she will fly out of the cage every time i go to get my male on my finger. but seeing as you ave a male it should be easier for you to tame him. there are lots of topics on taming on this forum just look through it.
March 4, 200421 yr Just sit next to the cage with you hand in whilst watching TV. Do this every day for about 15 mins and he'll soon get curious and see what your hand is. As for the dish thing - some are too lazy to perch and prefer the dish to prop them up whilst they sleep.
March 5, 200421 yr Thanks guys for the info, I am pretty sure that I have a male, however I am unsure. He/she it has a slight bluish tinge to the cere, but I believe that all budgies do initially. It got out of the cage yesterday as I was cleaning it and when I picked the budgie up, I did so very gently and didn't hold it tight, it really bit me hard, I was surprised. Having read some of the post so far, most peple say that hens do most of the biting????? Is this true and how do I definately confirm its sex?? When I got it, the pet shop wasn't sure if it was a m/f so I took her word for it, but now I am unsure. Either way I will keep it, but I wanted a male. Any Ideas.
March 5, 200421 yr a female's cere is brown and a male's is blue how to tell the difference (click here) your's is young and you will have to wait a while before you can definetly tell but i would bet you that you have a hen.
March 7, 200421 yr well my hen has stopped her biting now she just opens her beak as if to warn you but there are other ways to tell if a budgie is male/female lke you can watch him/her to see if they do a like mumbling noise if they do it is most likely a male.
February 24, 200619 yr Ziras a male & he chirps & head bobs!!!!!!!!!!!!!(but mostly in front of Angel, heehee) :bluebudgie:
