Posted June 6, 201213 yr I few days ago I collected a eucalpytus branch from a friends tree and while I was a little to consumed with talking to the woman about her pregnant dog, I didnt notice these brown spots on the leaves. I mean I am not angry or anything I didnt have to pay for it and she wanted the tree trimed in a little, I am just unsure on weither it is a disease or something and it's better to be safe right? And if it is a disease is it safe to give them the branches, I have already dis-infected them but I am really consurned as to weither it is safe because I have no knowledge in plants.
June 7, 201213 yr Hi Jodie, In the UK we don't have to worry about Eucaliptus spotty or not. To be safe most of us stick to Willow & fruit trees like apple, pear ect, I wouldn't trust nothing with spots on though perhaps some Botony types may help. I've got info of the web listing all the safe tree types, unfortunately I'm away on holiday at the moment. Yours B.J
June 7, 201213 yr I agree with BJ, I don't give anything with spots on it. Whatever caused the spot, whether disease or insect or what ever else it could be, the brown spot is a dead, rotted part of the leaf, so I consider that part of the leaf spoiled. Now, if you could remove the leaves with spots, would there be enough good leaves left worth using?
June 7, 201213 yr Author Thanks for that I was worried and yes I think they could have at least a few leaves each which is fine at least they have had some right? Again thanks for the reply. Would the branches be safe to give to them as perches or are they too infected? I have used apple braches previously but Eucalyptus was all I could get my hands on so, its a shame really. June 7, 201213 yr Eucalyptus are native to Australia and safe for budgies, the spots look similar to a fungus some of our gums get. Don't know if they would affect birds, they love to chew on the branches. Eucalyptus acts a bit like an antibiotic for birds. Don't know if I would give them the affected leaves but branch should be okay.
June 13, 201213 yr Author I am very sorry, but I am still unsure as to weither I should in fact give them the branches. Haa ha I am just so worried about it being a dangerous desease so I havent given any of the leaves but the branches are still where I left them after disinfecting. Sorry to bother you all again.
June 15, 201213 yr Well I suppose it's the old case of "If in doubt, leave it out". Surely you will be able to get some unaffected leaves and branch's a bit later on when the tree produces new growth.
