Posted April 22, 201213 yr It has been a week since i have put a pair in to a breeding cabinet, She is interested in him, rubbing her head on him nippng at him, but he is just sitting there like a dopy idiot ignoring her .. Should i give them more time or try a different cock ?
April 22, 201213 yr a week isnt enough time. Also of all my budgies I have only ever seen maybe one in a hundred actually mate and I have had hundreds of babies....................let them go and be patient. Be sure you have male and female for certain and that both are in full condition
April 22, 201213 yr Author well Im 100% sure they are male and female. Im sure the hen is in condition, her cere is a dark brown not confident about him though
April 22, 201213 yr Is his cere full dark bright cobalt blue ? and dark brown is considered a bit late for breeding the hen. You put them down to breed when the cere is light to medium brown. By the time the cere is dark brown it is nearly ready to peel off to reveal the white blue underneath of a hen going out of breeding condition. Post photos please ......clear cere photos using macro setting on your camera
April 22, 201213 yr The title of this topic is so bad with my level of maturity But anyway, I'd say you need to have let them meet each other before putting a nest box with them for a while, I would say a week to two, before putting the nest box in.. it just seems the humane way to do it.. even though birds arent human
April 22, 201213 yr I remember the old days before the importation of the English budgerigars. If you didn't see the cockbird mate within 5 minutes you would try another one. But usually they did mate within 5 minutes. Like Kaz said, these days it's rare to catch them in the act.

I put one pair in a breeding cage, and barely turn around after pairing up a second pair, and the first pair are already at it! But I agree with Kaz advice to give them more time. A lot of times you never see them mate, you just take it on faith that they are, because they are, well, budgies.
