Posted April 16, 201213 yr I was shocked to see a Melbourne pet shop selling 'Mop' budgies. It's really sad to think someone could buy these little budgies only to drop dead within a short time, and for $80 each, I'm lost for words. This pet shop also had a glass fish tank full of 'hand tame baby' budgies and cockatiels for sale. All birds had their wings clipped and half the budgies weren't babies at all. On a positive note, the shop is very clean, the cages are spotless and most of the animals look well cared for.
April 17, 201213 yr Wonder if pet shop didn't know the outcome of these little f.d'.s They may have been duped by a greedy breeder trying to make quick dollars. OR maybe they should be reported to r.s.p.c.a eg if they knew, to stop this practise. Disgusting
April 17, 201213 yr Name and shame so we can inform them........then we will know if they are aware or not.
April 17, 201213 yr Author Name and shame so we can inform them........then we will know if they are aware or not. I'm kicking myself I didn't say anything when I was there yesterday. I have rung them today, the guy I spoke to said he only found out today that they live a short life and die a slow painful death(YEH RIGHT). When I asked him if he was going take them off the shop floor, he replied NO. This guy had a bad attitude and didn't seem to care at all. Now I'm so angry I don't know what to do. I just hope no one buys them. Kaz, are you saying you want me to name this pet shop on the forum?
April 17, 201213 yr I was banned once before over Mops.It is cruel to let them live & for some one to have them in a Pet Shop & to be selling them They should be reported & taken to the cleaners.Name & Shame is the least that could be done.I could say a lot more. But I will leave it at that.
April 17, 201213 yr I think it is shameful. Going by the price tag the shop is called BestPet but what suburb. Edited April 17, 201213 yr by splat
April 17, 201213 yr Kaz, are you saying you want me to name this pet shop on the forum? In this case YES
April 17, 201213 yr I agree. This seems like a case where they shouldn't be getting away with this. It's highly unlikely that this shop is going to inform any buyers that these budgies need special care, and are short lived. An informed buyer wouldn't pay that price. So these Mops are being doomed to go to an unsuspecting person who won't know that they have to go the extra yards, just to give them any decency in their short lives.
April 17, 201213 yr Author The name of the pet shop is: Pet Mart 578 Springvale Road Springvale South (03) 9546 1711

April 17, 201213 yr How about we all send them an email. Telling them how we feel about what they are doing. I am going to send one. Might not make a difference, but if a lot of us sent an email they might just take notice. staff@petmartaustralia.com Edited April 17, 201213 yr by Twisted

April 18, 201213 yr it should be reported to the RSPCA , I talked to my sister about it, she works at the local RSPCA and she advised that you do. i could find out who to contact if you wanted
April 18, 201213 yr I would like to think, that some one told them or reported them, for having those birds for sale &the person who took them to the shop.I would like to think they were not a Member of the BCV. If they are they need a big rap over the knuckles.

April 18, 201213 yr I wondered if rspca could help if they are living in good condition. Something to be thankful for I suppose. Consumer affairs, maybe as his sign on birds is "false advertising" to say the least. If they happened to be rung may give a clue to ???? breeder. Edited April 20, 201213 yr by **KAZ**
April 19, 201213 yr Thank youfor everyone in regards to the “mop budgies”. Unfortunately these two budgieswere given at our Pet Mart Australia store, by a Budgie Breeder as it is wellknown that our budgies are only from local clubs. We have never seen a “MopBudgie” before and given no information on them. Theyhave been removed from the store andtaken to live out their days in a happy and safe environment. and a big thank you "Rachelm" giving as a call and giving us the information about them and your understanding in the matter. Thank you, Management

Thank you, Management Pet mart, I find it commendable that you have taken this information on hand and made the right decisions here, and in the process you too have learnt something about these unfortunate budgies and will know for the future if any come into your shop Edited April 19, 201213 yr by **KAZ**
