We are hoping to hand raise /tame our baby budgies. The kids would like to keep one each. Will they stay tame if there is two of them or is i best to only have one tame bird per cage.

Hi As a retired bird trainer I can assure you that. (A) They will stay tame. ( Two or twenty two wont make no difference..

 

You will get conflicting advice from those who have heard, read or made a half hearted attempt to try it..

I agree with BJ. The younger you start taming them, the easier it will be. I think when people say you can't tame older ones or multiple ones, it's because they gave up too quickly. Are you really planning to hand raise them yourself, or did you mean tame them after they are weaned by their parents?

We hope to handle them lots as youngsters but leave the weening to the experts (mum and Dad bird). Im a little nervous about doing feeds.

I think that since they are chicks you have bred yourself, you have the advantage of being able to take them out of the nest for a daily play time. Before they get feathers, I would only take them out briefly. And then when they have some feathers in, you can start having longer play sessions.

 

Even if you house the two of them together their whole lives, you shouldn't have any trouble taming them both, since they will be used to you from a very young age.

So impressed with the content on this forum and advice I've been given, thanks heaps. I had pet budgies about 15 years ago and have forgotten it all so it's great to get advice from experts without feeling silly asking about basics. Thanks again.

I'd suggest starting by sitting outside the cage, reading a book out loud (in a soft voice) Then opening their cage and putting your arm inside (away from the birds) and continue reading... next day you do the same thing, except after the second step, you put your arm in with millet.... (they must not have had any food for about 1-2 hours so they are slightly hungry) eventually, one will start getting interested and go onto your hand to eat the millet and the other will follow That should help you get started

Quite frankly, no..... I've not really actually read any of yours, just skim reading (I don't like long posts) Basically what you put on some of them is what's already on the internet rewritten (no offence intended, many people find things out that turn out to have already been found out... not sure if it applies to you )
