Hi I'm new here and I'm have one male one female parakeet both in breeding condition. I have seen them mate one time and they continue to preen/regurgitate. My ? is they have not been in the nest box at all and they know its there bc they look inside everyday. Will she lay eggs and will they be on the floor of the cage or in the box? Is this common for them to mate before going into the box to check it out? Is it common for them to only mate once? Thank you for all your help.

Most times, you won't see them mate. Sometimes, you don't see it at all.

I wouldn't worry, she probably won't nest on the floor while she knows the nesting box is there.

Good luck!

Hi Your birds are acting quite normal. Re nest box, Some hens are a little fussy about the nest box. You could try

another box or move the existing box to a different position. If as your worried about her laying on the floor, wait

till she does put them in the box & put the box in the same position on the floor. Mating, you cant watch them 24-7

they don't wait for an audience they'll mate as often as they want. Which they have to do if she is to lay fertile eggs.wub.gif.. Yours B.J

Thank you all for the very fast response. This site and people on it are amazing! Thank you as I will just sit back and wait.

I have had some first timers lay the first egg on the floor of the cage. I put that into the box. Sometimes they throw that egg back out, and then proceed to lay the rest of their eggs in the box. Sometimes they leave that egg in there, and lay the rest with it. Those are the good ones. I've had others that keep laying on the floor of the cage, or alternate between floor and box. So sometimes they just do everything all wrong, but most of the time, they get it right. :) Let us know how yours goes.
