My Budgie, is around 5 years of age. I havent been able to hand train her and she is super skittish that when i even take out the tray she freaks out though I do it quite often... Ive been told its impossable. And Im willing for any help, or if anyone knows a budgie trainer I could speak with, or if you are one Id love to speak with you about her, I can take pictures if anyone needs any. Please help if you can :)

5 year old budgie will be hard to handtame. Why so late? Anyhow just let her do her thing. They can still entertaine you a lot even though she's not hand tame.

Hello . You won't have any trouble no matter how old your bird is. Just follow B.J.s Taming blog on this site. Simple!......Yours B.J.

It will be harder to gain her trust, but I wouldn't say impossible.

I was looking after a 4 + year old hen, who bit hard and hadn't been out of the cage in years, and she was sitting on my hand ( and not freaking out ) the first night. Same thing with a cockatiel I looked after. Never been handled ( that I was aware of ), an five minutes later I was walking around the house with him on my shoulder. I don't think that would be the norm, though. I have a lot of untame budgies in the aviary, but then again, if they were inside, it would be a different story, I think. The only progress I made is that Zeus actually comes and sits on me now ( because he's bonded to a tame hen ), and the rest don't freak out whenever I go into the aviary, and they just ignore me.

You could try wing clipping, millet spray ( they love it ), just sitting by the cage etc.

Some people don't like clipping, but they grow back, and it's fine if you do know what you're doing. And it doesn't hurt them.

Millet spray is awesome. They absolutely go crazy for it, and if you try just sticking your hand in with a piece of it, you may get some results.

And just sitting by the cage and relaxing - a way to let her know you're not a threat.

Once she gets used to you, hopefully you'll get some headway.

Good luck!

Hi Can I suggest you read all the Taming posts, select one & stick with it. Yours B.J.

I dont think you should try past 6 month of age! As a budgies personality it set at about that age *B.J. your just funny.. lol!

A budgie's just another Organism, don't you think that your personality changes from when you're 5 and when you're 30???

I said you, shouldn't try as it can be extremely difficult! And stop comparing a budgie can never be a person.

But a budgie IS a person.... A person doesn't have to be a human being you know (although dictionaries state)

Im just saying, i wouldnt recommend it, at 6 months i would be training to speak a second language after english, not trying to get it to step up on your finger! Just some friendly advice from some who has attempted to train many budgies, of all ages!

So.. if something is difficult, then it shouldn't be attempted?

It's not very friendly advice if you are discouraging someone who has a 5 year old budgie that they want to spend more time with and give it more attention.

Tinkerbell, I say go for it!

Even if she doesn't become as trained as you might be imagining, you can still make progress with her bond to you, and you can certainly work on getting her to trust you. :)

Im just telling her the truth.. i dont want to give her false hope, with her budgie being 5 years of age instead of taming her you could cause more stress and damage than its worth.

Jets......you are telling her YOUR truth, and as we have found by ears and eyes open on the internet and hearing others stories and advice .....your truth isnt necessarily how it will be.

Go ahead and try Tinkerbell and prove the hardnosed Jetsbudgies wrong :D

LOL

How's it going Tinkerbell? Taming is such fun and is a great way to interact with your budgie. I'm sure you'll both benefit from it and I look forward to hearing all about your journey and would LOVE some photos :D
