Hello every one I was hoping someone could identify my baby budgie's gender I don't know anything about sex linked things but the mutations of the parents might help with gender of the chick: the Mum is a YF2 grey spangle dominant pied and the Dad is a YF2 cobalt opaline.

And here is the chick:

sorry if photo sizes are 2 big I edited them to forum size rules but the keep changing  .

CHEERS.

There is little point in guessing anything till the CLEARER PHOTOS SHOW UP :D

The chick is opaline so if the mother is not an opaline the chick must be female.

The photos below are the clearest I can get in the 1st Picture the cere shows blue on it but that's just the reflection of the icecream tub the 2nd picture ( distance ) is the actual colour of the cere a light pink with whitish rings around nostrils.

I am with Neville...Baby looks opaline to me..So If dad was opaline and mum was normal then baby must be a girl...( as long as it is opaline ).

Is the baby also cinnamon...? If so then dad would be split cinnamon which would again make baby a girl...

Yes the baby is cinnamon.

Here is the mum would you be able to tell if the mum is opaline? ( Yellow bird )

THe mother is an opaline spangle dominant pied & the dad is opaline so the chick could be either sex

Can any 1 tell the sex of the chick from the photo? :

dompiedbaby2002.jpg The nostrils are white around the outside not blue ( icecream tub

reflects making it seem blue).

If baby is a cinnamon then dad is split for cinnamon as mum cannot be split for cinnamon...This makes the baby a hen........

Today I just noticed the chick has a clear patch on the back of it's head. Isn't the patch on recessive pieds? not dominant pieds?

  • Author

Yes the photo's are of the same chick. I thought only rec. pieds have a clear patch on the back of their head but I guess I was wrong.

I understand why you used the word "gender" instead of "sex" in the title.
