Posted March 17, 201213 yr I was handling Vinnie today, getting him used to my hand and being out of the cage. When I was sitting with him, all of a sudden I started seeing little 'things' crawling around in and under and around his feathers. I first only saw 1, but when I held him closer and ruffled through his feathers I saw quite a few of them. I have had a look through the budgie FAQs section......and I "think" that they are mites........could these hurt him? I need to get something tomorrow to treat it......any suggestions? What are some of the symptoms I need to keep an eye out for? I can't see any irritation to his skin.....but his feathers on his head probably look 'thinner' than last week......are these 'feather mites' that I read about in the FAQs? Help would be appreciated Thanks, Louise
March 17, 201213 yr There are feather mites....longish brown mites usually seen in and on feathers. There are red mites that look like grey dots when not feeding and red dots when they are. Chances are he has feather mites. Usual treatment for feather mites is feather and mite spray ( I suggest getting some vetafarm avian insecticidal liquidator ) and spray him till sopping wet on warm day.....nowhere near his food. let him dry and that should be all you have to do as regards him. Then spray and clean his cage. Edited March 17, 201213 yr by **KAZ**
March 18, 201213 yr A shot of fly spray under the wings might do the trick as well.Or put him in a paper bag, with his head out & spray fly spray into the Bag.
