Killing Eggs?

Hi today i went to clean my budgies breeding cage and check the eggs and it was like a mass budgie murder crime scene there was bits of blood and egg shell everywhere im absolutely devastated could it be because they needed the calcium they havent had cuttlebone for a week because i run out and couldnt find any anywhere i had some on order and they came in today wish they came yesterday or is it just because they are just nasty and horrible parents, the female has been very protective over the nest box today and wont come out and if the male goes anywhere near the opening she attacks him does this mean he did it?

Hi Problem is you can't question the suspects. You can stop blaming yourself it wasn't the calcium. The body gets calcium from a variety of vegetables. Any suggestions would be pure conjecture on our part. Hens are very hormonal like most females at this time. I wouldn't

worry to much s***t happens there could be a number of reasons so don't beat yourself up about it. You can either split them up or clean up & try again. okay Yours B.J.rolleyes.gif

Agree with Bird Junky.

Most likely they've done it either by accident or on purpose, but you will never know.

Hi Stevie, I had a cock bird,(new) last season and he ate the eggs. The hen was then attacked, I think because she was protecting nest, Cock still has piece out of his cere from her fighting back.

If you could see blood or egg on one or the other, to tell which is responsible you could separate them and try her with a new cock.

I'm going to try mine again and see if he's okay now if not he's gone.!!!

thankyou, they wont eat vegetables the breeder i got them from never gace them veges so no matter how much i try they just wont eat them, im thinking of seperating them and putting them with other partners and see if it happens again then i should know which one it is

Hi It just goes to show it isn't just pet shop you have to be wary of.

After all breeders are where the pet shops get their birds from.

It is quite likely that the hen decided that this clutch of eggs were no good and decided to clear the nest out to start a new clutch. This often happens if the eggs are either infertile or dead in shell. I would give her another chance

They were fertile i had candled them and the eggs still had the chicks in them i wasnt game enough to check the one that was due to hatch in 5 days when it happened, A friend told me i should foster the eggs to another pair and let them have one and if they raise that one okay then they should be able to raise a full clutch
