Posted February 22, 201213 yr Hello Everyone, Okay I know my question will sound stupid but as I am newbie, I am curious to find out about this magical type of budgies. So basically my question is, how do you breed the first "show type" budgie?? Do you buy one from market or auction or do you mate some specific types of budgies to breed "show type" budgies? What about the crested budgies? How do I breed crested budgies (do I need to buy a pair or what?) The problem is that where I am from, we don't have budgie clubs here nor any auctions or competitions, so I know nothing about exhibition birds. Yes, I know how stupid I feel right now. Thank you for all your help guys. Edited February 22, 201213 yr by shajee
February 22, 201213 yr Hi Show birds are bred by those who are interested in showing. A decent budgie can cost as much as a family car. You wouldn't go to your local market to buy a thoroughbred racehorse. Nor could you breed one by pairing a up a couple of old nags. Good Show birds are not sold in the pet market only the birds not good enough for breeding show birds are sold in Pet Shops. Crested budgies are bred from Crested X Crested. Crested X Normal. Crest bred X Crest bred. Crest bred X Normal. Crested X Crest bred. Bird Breeders advertise in various Pet Magazines & you can get birds delivered from a breeder.. okay Yours B.J.
March 4, 201213 yr There are exhibition breeders in Pakistan. I've seen them post the good news is your not restricted to one country... You can import birds to Pakistan if you have the money... I don't know how much a family car is where BJ is from but I wouldn't be spending $5000 on birds if I was a beginner... In fact I wouldn't be spending that much at any stage... But basically, exhibition birds have been bred for many generations, to start from pet type to try and recreate exhibition type is just implausible... Not impossible but your grand kids would be able to see a bird that remotely resembles an exhibition bird nowadays, you wouldn't.

Hi A lot depends on whether your are just trying to breed bigger budgies.. That' s plausible. Breeding show birds from pet shop budgies. That will stand any chance of winning is impossible. While your grand children are admiring their efforts. Show winning birds will have moved on, probably rivalling poultry in size with feathering like a Polish X Silky cross....Yours B.J.
March 5, 201213 yr I agree you would be always playing catch up. Thats what I was trying to point out but I probably should've spelled it out more. And even then, lets faec it, the current exhibition birds have been bred by some people who have some pretty great husbandry skills (is it still husbandry when its birds) anyways. You get the point Shajee... buy from Exhibition stock from Europe if possible.
March 10, 201213 yr Author Thank you for your response guys, much appreciated. @JimmyBanks : Yes, I will try to contact a breeder that has show types budgies but I can't import from Europe as am not that rich
