Death Of Budgie, Need Answers !

Hi,

Not sure if this is in the right area but anyways..

I found my budgie who is only about 8 months old lying on the floor. By the time i walked to the car to go the vet he had already died.

A few weeks ago, I took him to the vet for scaly mites, which was treated by an injection.

Then, I noticed his breathing sounded like it was blocked, and he was tired all the time. So we went to the vet again, and was told he had a respiration infection. He was given antibiotics, (enrofloxacin) and was told to give him about 0.2mls every 12 hours for 6 days. I gave him the antibiotics a little longer because he still seemed sick. That was on the 16/1/2012, and its been a few weeks now. So I'm just wondering, was it right for the veteran to have given him the antibiotics? or was it my fault? should i have finished the entire bottle? or just stopped giving him the antibiotics after 6 days?

I MISS HIM SO MUCH. HOW DO YOU GET OVER THE DEATH OF A PET? :{

Thanks :'[

Hi button and bows, I am not an expert, and not had to deal with scaley mites but the usual treatment for them is 0 .1% ivermectin drop on the back of the neck. Someone else may know more about being given an injection, but doesn't seem right to me. Also how did the vet determine your budgie had a respiratory infection? Most of the info I found regarding enrofloxacin showed it being used to treat wounds and the like, rather than internal problems, but I didn't do a huge search, so will reserve judgement.

How do you get over the death of a pet??? The same way you get over the death of any loved one. Only time can help with the healing, and don't be afraid to grieve - it's all part of the healing process. Gradually you will be able to remember your little friend with smiles instead of tears as you remember the funny little antics and expressions that made him the delightful little character he was. RIP little budgie friend. :(

Hey! THANKYOU FOR THE REPLY! :)

George was given an ivomec injection, 10mls for the scaly mites.

hmm, he was given a micro wet prep, where they put a tube down his throat and got a sample.

I'm waiting on a reply from the vet to see why this diagnosis failed.

Also, if it possible for a budgie to be in a coma? like i read about humans thought to be dead, but actually was alive but was paralysed. Is it possible for a budgie?

I'm feeling a bit better now, :]

Ivomec Injection 10mg/ml (ML)

It seems to relate to the strength of the solution not the amount given

oh :|

so what do you guys think? was it the vet's fault that the medicine prescribed didnt help George?

... was told to give him about 0.2mls every 12 hours for 6 days. I gave him the antibiotics a little longer because he still seemed sick.

Antibiotics usually work quite quickly, and we have to be told to finish out the whole round of medications because so many people think that if they (or their pet) is better, why keep giving the meds? (The answer is because you might SEEM better, but the population of bacteria is still being killed, and if you stop the meds, it will re-flourish.)

But in your case, the antibiotics weren't working, so giving them longer wouldn't help. Did you tell the vet that the meds weren't working? Because that would be an indication to him to try something else- maybe the problem was not respiratory infection. If the whole time was spent treating the wrong thing, then the real problem was left unchecked, and could be what killed your budgie.

I wouldn't go blaming the vet unless you felt he was constantly giving bad advice or making you feel as though he wasn't taking you seriously. (I'm not getting that impression from you.) This can be tricky, because doctors and vets know a lot more about medical things than we do, so how are we supposed to decide when to trust their judgement, or when to question it?

We are pretty much limited to our impression of the vet's competence and attitude. Sometimes, a sick budgie can't be saved. But you should comfort yourself knowing that you did what you could to try.

Is an injection for scaley mites a common occurance? I would have thought the drop to the skin on the back of the neck would have been a lot less traumatic for the budgie than giving an injection.

I agree with Finnie regarding the vet. Without knowing just what was the issue with your budgie, you can't be sure the vet was negligent, and maybe George was not able to be helped.
