What Partner Should I Get For Sparta?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

I've noticed that Sparta has been getting really lonely lately, so I want what's best for her, so I've decided to give her the job of a breeder (well in about 6-9 months anyway)

So she's a cobalt, and I want some fancy variety to come out of her, I'm think the visual violet or something cooler if possible, can someone please tell me what mutation I should breed her with to breed which mutation?

Thanks

P.S. Remember, I won't actually be breeding her now, because she's only 2-3 months old, (I think she's starting her first moult though)

If you want violet you will need to choose a mate that is violet.

Another cobalt will produce all three shades of blue in the chicks

If you get a mate that is a dominant mutation like spangle, dominant pied or yellow face, about half the chicks will inherit the mutation

Wow, I've narrowed it down to two types that I want to breed, not sure if they're the same or not though. Cobalt Dominant pied, or Cobalt Homozygous dominant pied... They're both so cute

Homozygous is a term used in genetic's to describe the type of gene. Homozygous means dominant, so they are the same thing.

This statement is not true, and is corrected below, in Nerwen's post.

ohhhhhh..... I just saw two pictures and one of them said homozygous dominant pied :3 So I would just breed Sparta with a dominant pied?

Yes, you should get 50% normals and the other dominant pieds. Just make sure the bird you get is a DOMINANT pied, not a recessive...If you don't plan on taming the bird, I would get an adult (already with a blue cere), so you can't confuse it for a recessive pied. Otherwise, unless you are confident you can tell the difference, get the bird from a breeder, or research how to tell them apart.

okay, thanks Squeak, I don't plan on taming the Dominant pied, but I do want him to be of a similar age to Sparta :)

Homozygous means - identical alleles for a single trait.

another way of saying DF dominant pied.

i would still stick to a normal dominant pied - you will get a nice mix in a clutch rather than all pieds.

Flip, I would like to add, if you can find a double factor violet bird, you will increase your chances of producing a visual violet. Since two cobalts will only produce about 50% of chicks also being cobalt, which is needed for the visual violet to show up. A single factor violet would then give it's violet gene to only half of the chicks, and that gives you an expectation (roughly) of 25% visual violets. If you found a cock that was homozygous for violet, then he would give the violet factor to ALL the chicks, and then your percentage for visual violets goes back up to 50%.

But knowing if he's DF violet can be the tricky part. They are supposed to be less common. The breeder should know, though, based on the parents of the cock, if this is a possibility.

P.S. I forgot to mention, wait until your hen is at least one year old. I did the math, and if you wait 6-9 months, your two month old hen will still only be 8 months old. ;):)

Thanks Finnie, and I will know when Sparta is in her breeding age ;) And by the way, I'm not planning on making her offspring visual violets anymore, but rather dominant pied cobalt...

Do you know the chances of what the offspring'll be breeding with a dominant pied skyblue?

She is a normal cobalt, right? I know her photo is around the forum somewhere, but having it in this thread might be nice.

So dominant pied sky blue cock X normal cobalt hen gives you:

25% normal sky blue

25% dominant pied sky blue

25% normal cobalt

25% dominant pied cobalt.

And then you might be able to expect some surprises if both parents are split to matching recessive genes, or if the father is split to sex-linked genes. (Those would show up in some of his daughters.)

Thanks Finnie :) I'll see if I can get a male dominant pied skyblue, I like those percentages :D
