Posted January 26, 201213 yr I am looking to buy a baby budgie for my Mum, who is in her 60s and lives alone. She is keen to have a tame pet that she can allow out of the cage but is not particularly confident in her abilities to catch or handle a budgie so ideally it would eventually learn to return to the cage of its own free will. She lives in the outer eastern suburbs of Melbourne (Knox area) so I am looking for a breeder in this area. Ideally we want to purchase this weekend as this was meant to be her Christmas present so she is getting impatient! If anyone can recommend breeders in the area that would be great. Also any advice on hand reared or not. If I can't get a hand reared one will it be difficult to tame and what is the ideal age to buy - 5-6 weeks or is up to 3-4 months okay? Thanks. PS Kaz I have seen your advice to "research breeders". Any tips on how to actually do that?
January 27, 201213 yr We have breeders in here who have posted in the wanted to buy section...........breeders register here http://forums.budgiebreeders.asn.au/index.php?showtopic=18921 scroll through that but also members will see your post and answer if they can help you
January 27, 201213 yr I am looking to buy a baby budgie for my Mum, who is in her 60s and lives alone. She is keen to have a tame pet that she can allow out of the cage but is not particularly confident in her abilities to catch or handle a budgie so ideally it would eventually learn to return to the cage of its own free will. Please bear in mind that handraised baby budgies only stay tame when trained daily. If left to their own devices they become as flighty as any aviary bred budgie. Mum in her 60's would have to handle and train daily to keep the budgie tame and rarely do budgies want to go back in their cage on their own at first or even later so your Mum would have to learn to either catch with a net or train the budgie for going back into the cage. Personally, I would buy your Mum and male canary that can sing its heart out and be happy in its cage...... UNLESS your Mum is okay about ongoing training of a budgie ? PS Budgies bite too........especially females. Some of our elderly friends and relatives are on blood thinning medications and you would have to be aware that a bite can draw blood and may possibly be an issue. My Dad gave up his birds once he was in this position as bites wouldnt stop bleeding when they should. Sorry if I have grabbed a hold of the wrong end of the stick but these things must be thought through. Edited January 27, 201213 yr by **KAZ**
January 27, 201213 yr I recommend this one guy in Noble Park, not too far from knox. He hand tame budgies and he guarantees you will be happy with his budgie or will give you a full refund back no questions asked, not sure if he still got any or if still doing hand tame or not, last time i saw his ad on trading post. Got one handtame of him for my grandfather last year, he was so tame and has now started talking.
January 29, 201213 yr Author Thanks to those who have replied to me. I managed to find a 6 week old male budgie on the weekend, who is now happily ensconced in Mum's house. Now the taming begins! Deebo
