Posted January 21, 201213 yr Normally at this stage, I can tell whether a chick is going to be normal or pied by the skin color on it's wings as the pin feathers are starting to come in. What I mean is, as the little pinkies start to get some grey skin color, I look to see if it is random and spotty, or covers the whole wing. The dominant pieds have the whole lower half of their wing skin clear. This chick seemed to be normal, as it started getting more and more grey area, but then it didn't fill in the whole wing. It is a spangle, by the way, if that has anything to do with it. There is also an older sibling who is recessive pied.
January 21, 201213 yr Author ....waiting for the new less fuzzy photos Ha ha! I suppose I can try! I just meant this pink area in the circle. It's not grey like the rest of the wing.
January 21, 201213 yr i think it is just due to the spangle gene. it has been a while since I breed one myself and after looking at my pictures it seemed i didn't have one at the same age to compare to however flight feathers on spangles are mostly white which would explain the bare pink area on the wings, a few more days should have a black mark starting to appear on the pins (which you can just see in that second picture)
January 22, 201213 yr It does look like pied markings but Nerwen might be right and the lighter areas are caused by spangle. It could of course be both spangle & pied. In a few more days it should be clearer
January 22, 201213 yr What color are the tail feathers ? Here's my most recent spangle - Looks to be about the same age as yours (well in the picture She/he is now a month old Today) Spangle Baby Spangle Baby again Mine doesn't have as much pink area as yours so maybe yours is Spangle Recessive pied Haven't had one of those as a baby yet so No pics to look at , on my end.
January 23, 201213 yr I just think you need to wait a few days and not read too much into the pink end of the wings till some more colour and feathering develops
January 23, 201213 yr Author I just think you need to wait a few days and not read too much into the pink end of the wings till some more colour and feathering develops Yeah, but I went and took a clear picture just for you! Oh, and here's the tail. The two clear center tail pins were easier to see before the other tail feathers grew in the way. (I've always known this one was spangle. Well, not always )
January 23, 201213 yr hehe maybe it's going to be a girl and it's showing you from all the pink on its wing - wish it was that easy I've never really paid much attention to the amount of pink or lack of pink on the wings. I just always waited until they had a bunch of feathers then I could tell if they were pied or not. Every time I try to "guess" before they have enough feathers I end up wrong .. Like with my last clutch with Shiloh and Bella I thought all 6 were Pied and I was way off that's what I get for jumping the gun and wanting to know what they were going to be before they were ready to show me but I will have to start paying more attention to the wings and see how many I can guess correctly as pied and not pied .. If I don't ever practice I'm never going to know what they are before they're feathered. I've been practicing with the babies I'm hand feeding on telling genders while still young - and well that's not going to well but like I tell my kids Practice makes perfect - guess its time I follow my own preaching
January 25, 201213 yr Author Yeah, for me it's more for the practice of observing all the little differences and stages they go through. For instance, this is the same one that I noticed had really blue feet, in my other thread. So now I'll be watching to see if that pink area turns out to mean anything or not. I'll try to remember to put up photos of the chick later, when it's feathered.
