Posted January 17, 201213 yr i am just getting into looking after 4 birds,in 2 separate cages.when i got "baby",a young female, she was good with the first male budgie i got(both approx 5 weeks old each),they would sit on a cushion together on my lap for hours on end, whilst i was patting them, watching t.v,but he passed away when he just had his feathers clipped.i got another young male bird,,put them together,he lets me handle him,but she does not like that now,but she flies around in the house several times a day,and comes back to her cage..i spoil the birds to budgerie,i got every thing for them, how can i get back to patting her,the other two birds in the next cage are the males, should i separate the cages completely from each other,or put the divider back into the middle,to split the two young ones up,any ideas would be very much appreciated...

Hi Bruce, I could suggest that Baby could be feeling a little jealous of the new boy on your lap, but in truth no one really knows why birds sometimes do the things they do. Another possibility could be she being a hen prefers to fly around rather than sit with you. You could try getting her wing feathers clipped, by the time they grow again she may be a little friendlier. Only put the divider up if there is any trouble between the two young ones. Could you explain more about about the one who died after having feathers clipped please. When you say you spoil them I get the feeling your a little disappointed they don't show any appreciation for all you give them. Yours B. J. Edited January 17, 201213 yr by Bird Junky
January 17, 201213 yr Hi Bruce, welcome to the forum! I've moved your topic out of "In Memorium" to "Budgie Behavior" as it is more about the behavior of your female than about the one who died. (I am sorry for your loss, though.) I'm sure people will come on and give you some training tips for your female. Keep in mind, though, that as a general rule, budgies don't like to be petted on their backs. You might have better luck if you concentrate on teaching her to let you scratch her neck area with one finger, if she will allow it.
January 19, 201213 yr Author THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTION,I HAVE NOT TRIED TO PAT HER ON HER BACK,JUST PAT HER IN GENERAL.IT LOOKS LIKE I WILL HAVE TO BE VERY PATIENT IN TRYING,MAYBE THE OLD MILLETT BRIBERY MAY HELP. BABY SEEMS TO BE HAPPY WHEN OUT OF THE CAGE,SHE LOVES TO FLY A COUPLE OF TIMES AROUND INSIDE THE WHOLE HOUSE,AND GOES BACK STRAIGHT IN THE CAGE,I SUPPOSE THE GOOD THING HERE,IS THAT I AM NOT CLIMBING OVER THE FURNITURE,FETCHING.IN GOING BACK TO WHAT HAPPENED TO THE YOUNG MALE,I TOOK HIM OVER TO HAVE A FRIEND SHOW ME HOW TO CLIP HIM,SECONDS AFTER HE WAS CLIPPED,HE DIED THERE AND THEN.HE MUST HAVE PANICKED.THE LADY FELT UPSET MORE THEN ME.SHE GAVE ME THE YOUNG MALE I HAVE NOW AS A REPLACEMENT FOR FREE,I SUPPOSE IF IT IT YOUR TIME TO GO,YOU GO,END OF STORY

You will read in budgie literature that they can die of a heart attack if they get stuck somewhere and panic. But I've not really heard of that actually happening. It sounds like your friend who clipped him is a breeder, as she was able to give you a replacement? I've clipped many a budgie's feathers, and I've not had any panic during the procedure. It makes me a little curious about her method. Or, like you said, maybe it was just that bird's time to go, and it wasn't really a panic/heart issue after all. It can be hard to tame multiple budgies. Patience is definitely a virtue. I do think it's harder when they are fully flighted, so you may still want to consider having your baby girl's feathers clipped. Just maybe have someone else do it, although it seems unlikely to me that such an accident would occur twice. But if that lady felt bad, she might not be willing to do it again. You could look into learning how to do it on your own. I wouldn't be surprised if there were Youtube videos demonstrating it. I was afraid the first time I did my birds wings, and I had my daughter hold it for me. After I was done, I was surprised at how easy it was. I've done them all by myself ever since.
