May 18, 200519 yr aww thats soo cute will he have normal legs now?, i bet you and him become inseperable <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I hope so Andy he will have to stay in the bands for at least another week, then I'll cut the string to see how he goes. And yeah!! :(Laughing out loud): I anit partign with this little guy for quids, same as with the day older bub.
May 19, 200519 yr Hey, What does 'banded' mean? and why is it done and what is it?! We're new to all this!
May 19, 200519 yr if the baby budgie has splayed legs then the lags can be banded for a couple of weeks to straighten it out if its done at an early enough age
May 19, 200519 yr Hey,What does 'banded' mean? and why is it done and what is it?! We're new to all this! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Splayed legs can happenen due to a vitamin deficiency, bottom of nesting box too slippery, & main cause is the hen sitting too heavily on the chick. The little legs sit right out from the body & they cant tuck them back in under them, if left, they probably will never be able to perch. There are different methods of banding, I think I hit every site i could find on the subject plus with some help from this forum as to what to do. I noticed after I had got the legs together, that they still stuck out at the back, but a day later he had them under his body so he was still able to move them which was really encouraging. I'm going to try him after 10 days to see how he copes but from all i read, it should be left for about 14days. So heres hoping.
May 20, 200519 yr Congratulations Bev on all the things you have done to help this little guy. Well done :ygbudgie: Good luck and I hope it all works out.. Edited May 20, 200519 yr by Lady
May 24, 200519 yr Congratulations Bev on all the things you have done to help this little guy. Well done :ygbudgie: Look at Br. Burns now, & the older chick.T he banding worked to a certain extent, he certainly tries hard to hop along, but one foot is slightly twisted, but he is gonna be a real little love. The older bub is so cheeky, I think he is trying to get out of the nesting box, saw him looking out this morning.

May 24, 200519 yr Awww.....well done! I'm glad he's getting around!!! How old are they??? 2 weeks??? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> The bigger one emerged ((Laughing out loud)) on the 1st, so that makes him 23 days old, even tho Mr.Burns is only a day younger he is a fair bit behind. :parrot:

Well done <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Both are really friendly, but even Mum is very placid, she has never had a problem with me going into the box even at the very beginning, Guess I am really lucky there.

June 1, 200519 yr :sport: All excellent news Bev and congratulations again. Keeo posting those pics they are great and keep up the great work you are doing. :bluebudgie: <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Mr. Burns is doing fine as far as his little "pins" are concerned BUT, I am noticing more & more how much more the older one is advancing compared with our little one. Bigger chick has nearly all his feathers & looks like he is ready to leave the nest, whereas Mr.Burns only has limited feathers. I have checked his crop, it is always full but I am wondering if it is because the other chick is so much bigger is he getting most of the attention from Mum. Would a bit of supplementary feeding help out here? And if so , what would I give him. He is definetly not starving, so if anyone has any ideas please give me a few tips here. Also, would it help to post this in another forum?
June 2, 200519 yr If Mr Burns's crop is always full then there should be no need for extra feeding. The youngest chick always develop slower and his legs might have slowed things down too.
