Posted December 30, 201113 yr Here is my bargain for the day! Dominant Pied Opaline Dark Green, Blue ringer. I called our ring stweard, and she was bred by John and Barbara Fisher. I looked up the auction catalogue from last year (if any-one remember's) and she was sold on in that! I have no idea how she got to one of my local pet-shops, but she is a pretty well-bred bird is she is bred from Fisher's line.... I am certain she went for more in the auction. I am gonna try and ring-around to see how she ended up an hour from Adelaide, I live in the hills, most members live in town.... So someone down here must have bought her, we only have 1 or two other members down here. Anyways, i am happy with her nice chunky hen as far as I am concerned, bit wary of why she was in the pet-shop to be honest.... What do you guys think?
December 30, 201113 yr i think she is hormonal why she was culled bit of love may fix that right feed diet let her fly lose some weaight and iodione defiantly needs minerals
December 30, 201113 yr Author i think she is hormonal why she was culled bit of love may fix that right feed diet let her fly lose some weaight and iodione defiantly needs minerals I have her in quarintine, a large black one (size of two wire breeding cages Kaz uses) and she has cuttlebone and mineral block in there, with the normal feed.
December 31, 201113 yr Goodlooking hen, very fat, possible beginnings of scalyface ( so treat for that ). Check her vent and lower belly for signs of possible past history of either prolapse or internal egglaying. Just saying..not making a judgement here but it has to be considered as to why people cull hens. and I hope she comes good in your care and produces for you. Best of luck
December 31, 201113 yr Hope for the best but check her for all signs of the worst. I hope she turns out to be a good hen.
December 31, 201113 yr I have culled good hens and much better than this one because they have thrown me ****. Not because anything is wrong with them but if they don't click they go.

Just saying..not making a judgement here but it has to be considered as to why people cull hens. I gave her a spot of invermectin, so that will clear up anything... What am I looking for with the prolapse/internal egglaying? any disfigurement of the vent? I have culled good hens and much better than this one because they have thrown me ****. Not because anything is wrong with them but if they don't click they go. I am thinking she may have been sold because of the flecking.... She has it a bit in her cap, and a dirty V...Some breeders can be pretty picky. She would have been sold the first time because of the reduction sale, I will see if I can chase up the second owner.
December 31, 201113 yr What am I looking for with the prolapse/internal egglaying? any disfigurement of the vent? a sponginess, swelling or yellowing to the lower belly to vent area. Sometimes a bruising or knottiness under the skin. Otherwise breeding later on will have to be your only way to tell. She may be fine. But hens culled that arent old hens have to have had a reason for culling. Lets hope its just cos they had a better hen Edited December 31, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
December 31, 201113 yr I stuck my head in a new Mega Pet Store that opened the other day & the Budgies were $30 each,so at $15 that seem cheap.?
December 31, 201113 yr Around here Macka the pet shops sell off the green ones cheap, sometimes as low as $10.00 just to get rid of them. And it doesn't matter if they are pied , spangle or what ever, for some reason green birds don't sell very well. But the other colours always stay at the $20.00 or what ever they are asking. December 31, 201113 yr Wow - here they sell budgies the size of bush budgies for $30, and something the size of a pet type/show cross for $40. Some places are such rip offs
January 1, 201213 yr I actually sold a few last year, I mean 2010, they were babies and I thought they looked **** so I took the to the pet shop and got $8.00 each and any way a week or so later I had a couple of friends that chase my birds tell me that there was this bird in the pet shop with my ring on and their son said she had a great head and he was considering buying her, but bought a couple of the others because this hen was grey green cinnamon but they did say she was really a light colour so I do think he did buy her. But my point is I went in there to have a look and here was this stunning cinnamon grey green hen but I couldn't see the light colour they were talking about. But I asked the girl how much and she said they are green $10.00 so I snatched her back. She has turned out to be a stunner and bred me some lovely babies. Goes to show I cull to early. January 1, 201213 yr I know that I have culled a few too early but I have been getting good money on Gumtree for them. I fugure if I can get $30-40 for my pretty coloured cull baby cock birds I may as well sell them now and buy some seed. It would be a bit different if I were a champion breeder and got $50 plus for my culls as young birds. It works for me at the moment. I will only need to keep about 30 cocks as I double team the best ones anyway. I won't sell my baby hens though unless they are obviously no good. Years ago Julie I bought some really good birds at pet shops. I also saved a number of birds from going to the bird dealer earlier this year at an experienced breeders place who was trying to reduce stock quickly. Some of the birds went on to breed me some really nice stuff.
January 1, 201213 yr Yeah I am finding it hard this year trying to get seed as I only ended up with about 50 chicks and most of them are keepers. Hoping for a better result this year breeding because I don't mind breeding some ordinary birds so I can get my seed etc. I have inquires at the moment for birds but they want violets and so does everyone . lol Edited January 1, 201213 yr by splat
January 1, 201213 yr Author wow, I can't believe the prices some of you pay! At my local grain store, where I always sell and buy budgies, They are all $15. I sell them for $5. Even at the big big big bird delear I go to, they are $15 for pet's, $20 for show birds. I get $4-7 for my birds when I sell them there.
January 1, 201213 yr For UBCs I get $20-40 privately and $10 from the pet shop. Edited January 1, 201213 yr by fordmob
January 1, 201213 yr The going rate in most petshops over here us $15 assuming you dont give them too many greens......thats what they mostly pay anyway.
January 1, 201213 yr What do they sell them for Kaz. Here you get $8.00 and they sell them for $20. mostly. green go cheap sometimes at particular shops.

January 1, 201213 yr Well to add to the mix, mid noth coast nsw. I sell my surplus birds to pet shop ( pet/show stock) for $10.00. It is good shop that looks after their stock. Greens he will only pay $5.00 for. He sell's greens for $20.00 Coloured's for $25.00 they were $30.
January 10, 201213 yr Yeah - in Brisbane you are lucky to get $8 per bird at a pet store, tame or otherwise (one particular store sells them for $50, not even tame!!!!!) I can sell them, tame, on Gumtree for $25-$30 each easily. I even have back orders from people who want another as soon as I get my first clutch for 2012. I just find the >400% markup that the pet stores do completely insane. I have found one store in Brisbane that sells nice, young mature birds (have to sort through them though) for $15-20 out in western Brisbane but if anyone knows of any others in Bris please PM me Thanks
January 10, 201213 yr In Tassie they pay $5 to $10 each and sell for $25 to $35....Not many show types being sold in pet shops, so mainly small pet types..
