Posted December 2, 201113 yr Hi there, I have as much internet/pet shop knowledge that is possible when trying to figure out what gender my budgie is but I still am not completely sure! Can you help? Also, to the very astute, can you tell me what kind she is? I believe her (we think its a her) to be a dominant recessive but each time we see if different but similar kind, we change our thinking! Any help appreciated! i'm sorry, I meant "dominant pied" Edited December 2, 201113 yr by **KAZ** fixed image link
December 2, 201113 yr I fixed your dodgy link so the photo can be seen. Dominant recessive ?? Cant be both visually... one is either a dominant pied or a recessive ... so far looking like a recessive pied male but I wait for other photos. in asking for identifying the mutation you need other photos, ........iris ring or not ? and back and tail photos too showing wing patterns. How old is this bird ? Edited December 2, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
December 2, 201113 yr Author Hi Kaz, I did reply to my own post noting my sleepy error regarding "dominant recessive", I meant "dominant pied" Just purchased and told around 12 weeks. Also told it was a female! No iris, just big black eyes. Let me try post another picture. Thanks very much so far! I hope I can sort out the photo myself this time - tried what I could. Will upload others right now Thanks Kaz, I hope these pictures help with its gender and also exactly what kind she may be. Thanks for your help re the photos. Does it help to add that our male cannot bite to save himself and this new bird bites and craws blood? I thought males didnt really bite and females did? I thought this was another indicator that she was indeed a she. Here is another picture of her with our other older male budgie, Smokey. Our new one is with her/his back to camera. Incidentally, can you identify his kind? No matter if not.
December 2, 201113 yr i think female, but one photo did look really pink but she looks like she has some white around her nostril so i will say female.
December 2, 201113 yr Hi Brenbird looks to me like a male either recessive or combo pied grey or mauve, hard to see the colour properly. Also to me it looks like an adult bird. Cheers Jenny
December 2, 201113 yr Smokey is a dominant pied, new birds looks like a recessive to me, bit hard to see what sex by the picture but I am leaning towards a female.
December 2, 201113 yr its a receive pied im saying mauve and opaline but my guess is cock but you will know after molt as if its a hen will go nut brown cere cock will never change from that its young still see barring over eye
December 2, 201113 yr I vote recessive pied male. I can't see the color well, and since it has a clear mantle, I think that speaks to opaline, but I can't see any other opaline indicators. (I'm just not that good. ) I think Smokey is a cobalt opaline dominant pied.
December 3, 201113 yr Author Thanks so far everyone. By the looks of the responses, the jury is still out! We keep "feeling" she is a girl but in a lot of doubt now We also remain unsure as to what kind both our beautiful budgies are. It matters little, we adore them. This quarantine business is the pits - they are desperate to get together. Smokey hangs on the doorknob leading to Ngiri's quarantine room - (the photo of them together i quickly grabbed when the door was left ajar and Smokey was found to have snuck in - we admit we were bad parents). They call to each other all day. Anyway, enough rambling (at least you guys understand the obsession - its hard to talk budgies with joe average - you get the "are you crazy" look) Thanks everyone (more opinions still welcome!)
December 3, 201113 yr I was gonna say boy for sure but if it's as young as you say, I'm going to hold off a bit! Edited December 3, 201113 yr by nubbly5
