November 23, 201113 yr Author Thanks Taylor, the last one died yesterday but she was going to be really good.
November 23, 201113 yr Thanks Taylor, the last one died yesterday but she was going to be really good. Sorry your still losing birds Splat, I suppose you can't wait for season to end and see what next season brings. But your first picture is a beauty, hope you end up with a few that quality.
November 24, 201113 yr Author Thanks Robyn that little fella is going to really nice. Yes I am really excited about next years breeding now because I kind of know what I am going to get from pairs that lost most of their chicks. Plus I can't wait to put down the parents of my winning birds again. But problem is I hope they are still alive by next year, starting my doxy program and I hope that helps. they have had the turbosole and that seem to help the breeding pairs, chicks stopped dieing and since then they have had coccivet because all of the rain we have had. I really don't like to give them to much medication but I think with what has being going on I think it calls for it. If I find one more bird sick I am off to the vet because I have to know what is going on. but at this stage all birds look as healthy as and I just pray they stay that way.
November 24, 201113 yr The spangle is a beauty.. Love the Dom pied's colour.. Shame about the hen, would have been a good one..
November 24, 201113 yr Author Thanks Twisted, yep I have high hopes for that spangle crossing my fingers lol. Yes that hen was a beauty too, her brother came 1st at the shield in the normal spangle class, she couldn't go because she was plucked on top of her head and had pin feathers but she was better than her brother more feather and directional feather, I think that is why she struggled because of her feather, she was moulting and I think it took it's toll on her and I put her in the hospital cage and i think I made her worse, who knows, we did an autopsy nothing conclusive though. Can't find anything in the droppings either. But i am thinking that what happened in the breed room with all those chicks dieing is taking a toll on some of the ones that survived which is this hen. They may have a weakened immune system or something. Anyway just have to look to the future and hope that pairs breed me more the same next year.
November 24, 201113 yr Hey Splatty, I'm shocked to hear that you breed a father with his own daughter Do people really do that?
November 24, 201113 yr Author Yes Flippy, this is my 1st year of doing it though, but next year with the offspring I outcross with new blood and then the following year I take the chicks from the outcross mating and bring it back into the line, it is called line breeding, some call it inbreeding because it is very close. I mostly do cousin/cousin, half/brother half/sister and auntie/uncle matings which is line breeding. It can bring out the best of the parent and it can also bring out the worse.
November 25, 201113 yr Great birds again Julie, the violet spangle is a keeper I think . Very deep mask on it. I have some lutes and a grey green to show you but I might wait another week or so till they are perching. A real shame to hear about that hen. Edited November 25, 201113 yr by fordmob
