set up a rescue centre instead???????

Just what I was thinking, we are breeding in very small amounts for ourselves, our avairy will be at lease 6ft by 6ft by 10ft more if I can persuade him. We are very careful with what we are putting together, we may go into show birds when we are more into it. I do some work with a rescue, why not contact your local animal sanctury and see if they do rescue birds, the sancturys here sometimes rescue all sorts of things, the one that I help had 10 in not long back, not the usual but worth looking into. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. Breeding brings its own rewards but dont breed more than you can keep, if your anything like me you wont want to part with any.

Rachael ;)

I doubt I'll go into breeding. Lots of things have happened to set me back on track. Namely a little cockatiel in need of a home.

There are no rescues or shelters here that take in birds (or anything other than dogs or cats) but there are plenty of unwanted birds out there so I'm just going to keep the future open for some of those.

thats a lovely option to take eterri :( bless you for opening your arms to any unloved little birdies.

Thanks pixie.

This is one decision that I feel very confident about.

I've been doing a ton of reading on mytoos.com since I last replied to this, and didn't realize how awful the conditions were for so many of our feathered friends out there. Then just yesterday I went to a large bird store here in Phoenix, and witnessed for myself the effects that neglect and abuse can have on a bird, and sat with 2 plucked and shaking macaws talking to them quietly for almost an hour. My point being, I see exactly why you would want to get into rescue as opposed to breeding, and I support you 100%!!!! I guess I am a fool for expecting all owners to treat their pets well :) The owner of the bird store I was in told me the stories about these macaws' awful owners before she rescued them, and noticed that I was spending a lot of time with them and asked if I wanted to stop in more and see them. At that point I offered to come in a few hours a week in my spare time and help clean cages, socialize with the birds (HUGE store, TONS of species), and attempt to comfort the pluckers with unconditional love and see if they respond.

Anway, I think leaving the rescue option open is an absolutely fantastic idea, and I am looking at purchasing a couple acres to start doing this myself maybe in a year when I have more experience.

That's wonderful. Maybe one of these days when you have your rescue established I'll come visit the birds!

Absolutely, that would be fantastic! Free place to stay and lots of room if you wanna hang for awhile! After many years of living to work, and having my life 0% enriched by the surplus income I've generated, I'm confident that I've finally found what I want to do with it, and the labor of love I want to espouse from herein. I love all animals, but the flock really holds my attention and devotion like noneother. Maybe when I start to plan this out, we can collaberate to make sure it's done right :) I may actually go back to Illinois to do it though, this Arizona thing is only temporary, my home sweet home is smack dab in the middle of Illinois, and I love the midwest :D

That would be even better! :) It would be a much shorter drive for me, that's for sure. :(Laughing out loud):

Bah, I would've sent Southwest Airlines for ya anyway, no biggie :) Kentucky is BEAUTIFUL by the way, I absolutely love the relatively uninterrupted landscape and rolling hills that go forever..... that would be a PERFECT place to have an aviary. I just realized that putting a rescue in Illinois would probably get a LOT of birds from Chicago, there must be tons of neglected pets up there. All this talk about rescue has me thinking about those poor macaws just up the street, I think I'm going to drive up there and sit with them for awhile and see if they are willing to talk quietly for awhile. Talk about tugging on the heartstrings.........

:bb: Hi eterri Good luck on what ever you decide to do. I think you would be a great breeder.

I know all the people I sell to and they ring me for any advice I can give them, If they have concerns. I help them as much as I can and I know they are in good homes. I have never sold to any pet stores, I just can't come at it. Good luck with your venture. :)

well you could have knocked me down with a feather (which is not easy as i am 6 foot 4 and 18 stone)
