Posted November 6, 201113 yr I currently have a flock of 16 pairs all green that are breeding? Also have two blues that have yellow masks. i obtained these from a know bush budgie breeder although i will now refer to all my birds as wild type so not to cause arguments . i am interested in breeding the greens and keeping a flock of these, but will also cull any mutation and breed in separate colony just to see what mutations are produced over time. i have got a head start due to the breeder that i obtained these birds from has been breeding for 20 + years from his original stock. will try and keep it current and photo's to come.
November 6, 201113 yr I'm guessing you mean you have greens and YELLOWFACES? Can't wait for some pics! Keep us updated
November 6, 201113 yr Author Yes but only produce more yellow face blues when breed. breeder that the birds come from has never thrown one with a white mask and he has a few blues now.
December 9, 201113 yr Author Update on breeding now have about 40 budgies one new blue rest green. Will have to cease breeding till i can rehome some. will try and get photo's working soon.
December 9, 201113 yr I look forward to seeing the pictures. I think the idea of owning bush budgies is good, unfortunately I'm way to synical and would want to be there and actually see the birds getting caught in order to believe they were genuine bush budgies. That said, I still wanna see your pics
May 2, 201213 yr Hi, really nice greens. They are greens really great little birds, yet pet shops don't seem to want to buy greens. They say they are too hard to get rid of, but they are after all the forerunner of all others.
September 18, 201212 yr Author Back again bird numbers are down again so will be letting the birds breed over summer. will post some picks when i can, looked in the nest boxes today first egg has been laid.
October 6, 201212 yr That blue you had last year, was it produced by your greens, or did you buy it in? Just curious.
October 10, 201212 yr Author Produced by a blue bought from a breeder, blue hen green cock, wild type breeder that has been breeding wild types for 20 + years due to him not introducing new birds his birds are starting to throw a couple of mutation. really intresting to get a new mutation in these litte guys. Have got five pairs with eggs know 8 eggs in each box.
October 18, 201212 yr Well, once you buy in a blue bird and breed it to your wild types, the offspring are no longer considered bush budgies.
October 28, 201212 yr Author Blue comes from the same place all my greens came from. which were all green till his birds started to throw some mutation. All depends on what you define as a bush budgie. I like to see the development of mutation from these little guys. I now call them wild type because, i have had lots of long discussion on this topic and people don't change thier views easily. Hope no one takes this the wrong way just here to enjoy the birds.
October 29, 201212 yr They throw up Blue's in the wild... but from all accounts they don't last long because the stand out. Good luck with your breeding. Look forward to seeing your birds. Lets face it, the birds we all have now have all come from these little fella's. It's amazing what some time and skill and a tinge of luck can bring.
October 29, 201212 yr Sorry. Somehow I thought you meant you had bought in an unrelated blue bird to mix in with the wild types. I think you are right about using the term "wild type". From what I understand about other species of birds, and even fish, "wild type" means that it is the original, normal color, without any mutations, regardless of its line of parentage.
December 2, 201212 yr Hi, i have been breeding "bush Budgies" as well . Ive sourced my stock from a few places and this included aquiring some mutations . Like Type 2 yellowface, dark factor, and white face(blue), i have since bred recessive pied both yellow and white but the birds of this gene outcome see a bit weaker and i have not bred from these burds yet tho some are now ready and are chomping at the bit (so to speak). Ive also got a segregated aviary for non gene polluted bushies i got from South Australia. I have built up quite a flock and have kept some of the mutations to "Play with" even tho i really am just focussed on the pure wild type. i have a bee a bit obsessed with aquiring pure stock and am keen network with others to maintain thispure wild form. Regards WIld Type
December 5, 201212 yr Author It's good to here their are a few people out there interested in wild type birds. Breeding season, having mixed results when I get some time will try and put some of my results down main problem hawk back. Look forward to hearing more from you wild type it sounds like you have lots of experience with these little guys.
December 5, 201212 yr Hi good news and bad today. I picked up a pair of bushies today that came from a wild parent,s a great find and im hoping they will settle in easily. Bad news is that when i got home I found i had lost 2 birds. One hen totally missing and eggs cold and a male also missing ???? After looking i finaly found a smallish diamond python in an unused nest box with 2 lumps in him i guess i found my birds. So snake has been relocated . It was a beautiful snake i might add. I roll shade cloth down half the wire to stop the goshawks where i am. i have had probs with them too.
December 11, 201212 yr Produced by a blue bought from a breeder, blue hen green cock, wild type breeder that has been breeding wild types for 20 + years due to him not introducing new birds his birds are starting to throw a couple of mutation. really intresting to get a new mutation in these litte guys. Have got five pairs with eggs know 8 eggs in each box. Hi The green cock must be split blue. It would need pairing to a blue or a green split blue to produce any blue chicks. I understood it has been illegal to take budgies from the wild for many. many years. (I forget when), certainly far longer than your friend has been breeding. If they're not illegal, they are pet shop birds bought from a pet shop or breeder.......B.J.
December 11, 201212 yr it is illegal to take from the wild but if you persiste you can find stock only a generation or 2 from wild . South Aust Museum had some for a while and they then offloaded them to breeders so i have some from these guys . another guy i got a pair off last week is a pig hunter and came across a nest and pilfered it i think . i aquired the young from this aquisition . I have bought bush budgies with different mutations like blue and dark factor as well as yf type 2 and rec pied. All these are really recent mutations and this breeder was not the only one to have them pop up. The recessive pied for example is not a strong line yet and i have not been able to breen from these birds yet. i keep these mutated birds seperate from my pure stock.
December 12, 201212 yr Author Some nice looking budgies. Not many eggs hatching, not to sure why . haven't had this much trouble for a while was wondering if it was climatic. Is anyone else having any trouble.
December 12, 201212 yr Author The breeder that I got the birds off obtain them from a research centre when they had finished with them. I don't know exactly how long but knew it was more than 20 years. I am happy with them. It really dosen't matter as long as you are happy with your budgies. I am really starting to enjoy these really small budgies. Most pet shops will not buy my birds because they are to small, I have only found one shop so far and they don't take many. Their will never be any guarantees as breeding records have not been keeped and yes you can not take them from the wild which is good. But you can always breed to get them back to their natural size and couloir the same as show breeders do to make them larger. And people that breed them for colour and varieties. that what makes them such a good bird. Happy breeding Some of both.
