The Vet Failed To Notice That My Young Budgie Was Ill

i had 2 5 month old male budgies, Halo and Silver. a few weeks ago i noticed that Silver turned very silent, fluffed up and was alittle lathargic. I seperated him from Halo placing him in a smaller cage so that i could keep an eye on him. After a couple of days i deicded to take him to see a vet for a check up. The vet checked him over and said that nothing was wrong with him. I was puzzled. i just had a gut feeling that something was wrong with him as i knew that it was unusual for budgies to go 'silent' for a day or so. I took him bk home and tried to cheer him up by chatting to him and giving him his favourite treat. Lettuce. He ate but just wasnt right. The following day i noticed that he had a 'clogged up' bottom. i took him out of his cage and checked him. i got very worried so i took back to the vet. The vet seemed 'pissed off' as i was bringing him back. He told me that he'd said there was nothing wrong, but i wasnt happy. He cleaned him up and said that he was hormonal. i took him bk home. i was getting very upest so i phoned another vet and asked for some advice. they said that they could book him in for a check up after 2 days at the earliest. it was the weekend. By the monday Silver was worse than ever. I was beside myself. I took him out of his cage and there was just no weight to him at all. He was gasping for air and he had yellow gunge coming out of his cere. He finally died in my hands. I was so distraught and i cried for ages as i loved him so much and he was just a baby. 5 months old. My son cried too and was so angry that the vet didnt save him.

I am so angry that this vet couldnt be bothered to properly examine my budgie and let him die a totally unnatural death of pain and suffering!!!!.

I am now reporting the vet for total incompitance. He's a bloody disgrace and shouldnt be a vet....

I am real sorry about your loss. It sounds like the vet was a general vet and not an avian vet. An avian vet would have done tests while you were there, at least a poop sample and look at it under a microscope, and a blood test...this is normal practice for avian vets and the tests only add another $20 to the vet bill. AND you would have gone home with meds appropriate to the illness.

Find an AVIAN vet and dont use a general vet for birds....these are the lessons many of us have learnt. General vets dont know enough and arent worth paying.

and the vet you saw sucked........attitude like that wont keep business coming in his doors for long.

PS one thing you can believe in is your intuition about something being wrong....you were spot on and the vet let you down.

Thats a total DISGRACE, avian vet or not it doesn't take much to tell a bird is sick, i,d give hime a mothful, RIP mate

There is a lack in vets specializing in certain species. I am lucky to have the Melbourne Avian Clinic about 5mins away, and I am deeply sorry. RIP.

Reporting this d***h**d will never fix the problem.

There will always be idiot vets like that.

But knowing that you could save other people's pets by revealing this guy, to me would be satisfying.

I also don't get why he complained, your paying HIM so he should be more grateful and continue down another career path, lol

RIP little guy, fly free

So sad! RIP little fella.

Unfortunately vets are like anyone - some are great at their job and some are just plain sh*t at it. Some are better with dogs than cows and some are better with birds than cats. The bummer is that your vet was sh*t at budgies (or just plain sh*t, maybe). I have some amazing stories of complete vetly ineptitude that would curl your hair. Most of them are fine when all they need to do is stick a thermometer up your dogs bum to tell you that it's temperature is normal!

Just a heads up if you decide to get another budgie, isn't lettuce really bad for budgies?

iceberg lettuce is not good since it is mostly water with little nutrience. The darker green lettuces such as romaine lettuce is a better choice.
