Mutation Or Illness?

Featured Replies

Its just some suffusion through the body feather, sometimes it moults out sometimes not. Ive seen an awesome cinnamon cock that had this , he won at a few shows even with the suffusion, his young had inhereted the feather suffusion also.

Its possible that it could be a feature that could be bred into a bird, would make an interesting variety.

I'm only new but I think he looks really cool. :)

when you increase to 400% feathers look layered not sitting flat ? Is it your bird?

I think I'm with Jen on this. There are some feather mites that cause this sort of feather damage. Just on the very edges of the feathers. They end up looking a bit ragged. Had a green hen with this very same issue (purchased at auction!!!!) and a good dose of Ivermectin solved the problem.

One way to find out...check for mites. But I just want to say I had a chick exactly like that ones feather thing and it didnt have mites. I will try and unearth a photo tonight.

Bizarre. It doesn't look like feather mites to me. The greywing colour seems to be suffusing through the body colour on the feather tips.

Zuzel, can you remove one of the body feathers and take a good close up photo of it? That way we can assess if the feather has any damage. I am guessing that the grey colour is on the tip of the feather. I suppose that could be hard to see in the photo.

Hi, I've got some new info.

Tis budgie was bought in pet shop about 3 years ago, his owner doesn't remember if he had this grey margings on chest from the beginning, but probably he had.

Igorek lived with another budgie - with normal feathers, no markings on chest.

I've got some pictures of feathers (they wasn't removed from the body, just taken from cage):
