Posted October 18, 201113 yr Hiya all, I've just bought two new--gorgeous Fallow-- English budgies from a petshop. I've already looked through the post about legring colours to determine their age, but I'm confused. One of the two boys has only one legring on his right leg. A very definite purple, with: CDB (then a '10', reading from top to bottom) LW and 3 numbers. I'd have said he'd have been born in 2010, but his legring is purple, which is apparently for 2011? Also, the second bird has two legrings. One on his right leg that is purple like the first bird, with the letters CDB.. then '01' when reading from left to right..since it's sideways, not just one above the other like the previous ring. Then of course the LW 029. On his left leg is a bright blue ring, saying: CDB (then '10', sideways, or '00' with half of a '0' missing because that's where the edge of the ring is. Unlike the previous ring where the '1' was a definite 1, this number just looks like a bent line..like the punctuation at the end of this sentence) LW 021. I hope that wasn't too confusing!! I'd like to know what ages they are, especially since I bought them specifically for breeding and adding the Fallow gene into my flock. Thank you! Edited October 18, 201113 yr by Jen144
October 18, 201113 yr They are 010 & 011 birds. They were hatched in 2009/10 or 2011. You will be able to track down the breeder,by the ring code.
October 18, 201113 yr Author Thanks. So the first one is born in 2010, the second in 2011 (or the other way around?). Why the two legrings on one bird? And different colours to what would correspond to 2010 & 2011 in the list? Edited October 18, 201113 yr by Jen144
October 18, 201113 yr Legrings in australia come out in Septemeber of the year before the ring year on the birds. For one of your to have a blue and purple ring on it the breeder doublke rung those chicks.....later he would have decided which ones to keep and which rings to cut off. Rings coming out in September makes a bird not exactly the age you think it will be. One of the two boys has only one legring on his right leg. A very definite purple, with:CDB (then a '10', reading from top to bottom) LW and 3 numbers. This bird wearing a 2010 ring could have hatched anywhere between Sept 2009 and just prior to sept 2010. This bird Also, the second bird has two legrings. One on his right leg that is purple like the first bird, with the letters CDB.. then '01' when reading from left to right..since it's sideways, not just one above the other like the previous ring. Unlike the previous ring where the '1' was a definite 1, this number just looks like a bent line..like the punctuation at the end of this sentence) LW 021. would have hatched more likely september 2010.....hence the breeder decided to hedge his bets and put both his previous years blue rings on and the new purple ones too. That bent line you see is a code each state has against the year number.......some states have a diamond shape and then the number, some a triangle, some a dash....etc. The breeders code is the LW part and the number next to that is the birds code. The CDB is the code for the budgie club. Edited October 18, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
October 18, 201113 yr Author Thanks Kaz, thanks macka! I'll probably be back soon (once I've found the cord to charge my camera with....) with pics of the two guys. Especially since I'm suspecting the one with only one legring may be female. Got a paler cere than the male and very definite white rings around the nares. No brown or anything, that's why I'm not certain.
October 18, 201113 yr Forget that white rings around the nares thing. its one of the most misleading bits of info about budgies on the net today.
