Cock Can Not Climb On Hen To Mate

Featured Replies

Hi,

One of my newly paired budgies are trying to mate and they are both above 9 months old.

The Problem: When the hen bends her back, then cock only puts his one leg on her and then does not climb on her and then he falls down. The perch is quite fine since other pairs mate without problems.

He is too much active and always tries to encourage the female for mating, but at the end above problem happens.

Does it mean that I should replace the cock or he will learn? I saw him at least 5 times in that situation.

Any advices?

Thanks,

Above 9 months??? They need to be over 12 months, not 9 months. They are too young to be breeding. Remove them from the breeding cage and try them again in 3 months.

They are probably 10 or 11 months, they are in correct age as per my experience, that is why I wrote ABOVE 9 months.

I will appreciate if some one help me regardgin the issue please.

Hi Tariq, although I'm not a breeder myself, I may know a solution that could help, but then again I'm thinking that I will most likely be incorrect. If possible, get one of those wire hamster platforms and put it under a perch, if the budgies are smart cookies, the hen will stand on the hamster platform and the cock will try and get on her back via perch. This is all in my imagination as I have no experience in breeding :/ hope it helps

Too young and inexperienced.

and Flip trainer  sorry, but watching reading and learning is best when you dont have the experience.

I know, it was just a suggestion that came off the top of my head :D I don't think ;)

With time and hanging around here you will learn plenty by the time you get your precious budgie friend :)

I wouldn't worry to much because they probably mate probably when you are not watching, they can even mate on the floor but if you are really worried put a double perch in.

You are only talking about pet types so they are probably different than my birds but I no longer breeder with cocks under 18 months. I find they are to immature and hardly ever fill an egg. But there is the exception.

For example all the cocks I bred last year I did not use this year, I will use them in March next year on wards.

Yes, they must get embarrased when you're looking ;)

(Sorry if offended, but it is quite natural for someone to get embarrased when sharing a.... special moment.... with someone) :D

Budgies and other birds dont care if you are watching or not if they feel like mating. They dont get embarassed.

its just that they usually mate early morning before most people are out of bed.......but they mate at any time of day too....when the mood takes them,.....they dont get embarassed and they dont care if you are watching at all. My husband was in his aviary yesterday and two of the tamer princess parrots were mating while on his shoulder.

Thanks KAZ and all others for the comments.

KAZ - You mean they will learn after several attempts? Seeing them today I noticed that the hen bends too much more than normal hens and the cock also can't climb. LOL

So porblems from both sides.

And FYI I am doing colony breeding.

I know you are doing colony breeding......you have already said so.

yes they learn with experience, but I find more successful when a few months older than yours are.
