Posted October 10, 201113 yr Hi, i saw one of my hens out of the nest and thought I look as eggs are due to hatch, i noticed something I have never seen...half the egg shell was off, and chick was in the membrane sack. Which I understand is suppose to all come off together, the membrane sack was dried and chick was chirpping. I called a mentor and said that I was seeing things and its inpossible to happen, stressing that chick cant break through the shell without going through the membrane sack first. Thanks!!! Anyway it did happen JUST WONDERING IF THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ANYONE ELSE OR AM I THE ONLY FRIUT LOOP WHOS HAD THIS HAPPEN TOO!!!!!!!!!!! What I did made the chick die anyway......
October 10, 201113 yr I would say the hen chipped away at the egg and not the chick and that is why the membrane would still be intact and it would of been a bit early for the chick to hatch, even one day makes a difference and that is probably why it died.

October 11, 201113 yr Same here, I had one chipped like this, a while later I checked and found a dead chick thrown out of nest box. I think the hen got over eager and chipped egg but I'd say chick was a day or two early. To add, yes the chick has to come through the membrane first as it line's the shell.
