Might Be Ready To Breed

Hi,

I'm new to the budgie world, and have a behaviour question. This morning, my female budgie started grabbing shredded paper from the bottom of her cage and started to move them and look around the cage with the paper in her peck. Also she is the only budgie I have. My question is, is this her way she is getting ready to lay eggs, or is this her way of trying to find some entertainment?

Sounds like she is playing with the paper :)

Some females can lay eggs all on their own but generally something triggers them into this behaviour. Having large seed dishes that can be seen as a nest may be a trigger as well as having snugglehuts etc.

okay thanks. That's very helpful. Could adding a strip of spray millet into the cage might have trigged this "breeding" behaviour being a large food source?

No, not in itself. BUT a part of their inbuilt instincts are when daylight hours are long and food is plentiful its time to make babies. BUT she is alone and all she has done is play with paper. I think she is fine :)

About the laying of eggs, is this something that happens like chickens(eggs will be produced wither a male is present or not), or does a male need to be present for the eggs to be produced, or I'm completely off and have no clue about budgie reproduction? Having a budgie is a lot different then having a cat.
