October 16, 201113 yr Looking good, bet you cant wait. I didn't get anything done with my birdroom this weekend as the weather in Tassie was rotten.

October 23, 201113 yr Nice snake LoL Coming along very nicely i see I,ve killed 11 snakes in the past 2 years at my place, pretty overpopulated
October 23, 201113 yr Author you think it looks abit flat because i droped a pavr on its head to make sure it was dead but my cat got to it first
October 23, 201113 yr a good reason to sheetmetal up two feet from ground level all around the aviary
October 23, 201113 yr lol, I nearly got myself killed by one of those a few years ago, luckily, I had an ear–piercing scream, so the vibrations were obviously too much for the snake to handle
November 9, 201113 yr Looking great, keep pics coming. As to snake, had a tiger snake"climb" up and wrap itself around a gateway into fowl pen, 6 feet off the ground. A few years ago now in rural area. Your cat is the best bet l.o.l they seem to hypnotise them or something, ours used to bring us LIVE ones for a treat.
November 13, 201113 yr I would really put sheet metal all the way around the aviary like Kaz said because I heard a story the other day and it horrified me . It went like this........ breeder in the western suburbs of Melbourne I think. Well he couldn't work out why some of his birds were missing and we are talking good birds and this breeder I think is a Champion breeder also. Anyway this was going on for a while and I think in the end he sat out there and watched to see what was going on. And what he discovered was a large snake I think brown was climbing up the wire to the roof and sliding through the channels of the sheet metal roofing and eating his birds. I didn't relise they could do that but they have scales on there bad that grab hold of the wire and enables them to climb the wire. This rotten snake has being doing this for quite a while, had his meals worked out in advance because it was easy food. Poor little birds they never had a chance. Â Plus small snakes can slide through normal bird wire and that is why I have mouse and snake proof wire of my aviaries, but some aviaries only have it on the bottom but all aviaries have 3 foot high sheet metal all the way around.
November 13, 201113 yr Ha! This is PRECISELY why I have put snake and mouse aviary mesh on the roof and then put the roofing on top of it PLUS blocked up the channels with wire wool!!! Â NASTY SNAKES. Edited November 13, 201113 yr by renee

I would know by now if they did.
November 13, 201113 yr Hi all, as I only have pet types and my aviary is a wire front and full wire flight. My greatest enjoyment is sitting on the patio watching my birds play. If I were to sheet metal around it I would lose this. As this lad is only young and Dad is helping him get started I expect it would be a big added expense for him. Maybe if he goes into show birds a bit later he may consider this. Unless he has a huge problem with snakes,I think normal aviary wire is okay. he could use the live trap type mices traps so his birds are safe from them. Just my opinion. Â Â
November 13, 201113 yr I know what you mean Robyn, my aviaries are in the backyard not far from where Greg and I sit, so I can watch them all the time and I use to enjoy watching mine on the floor too but not anymore, I have to settle watching them on the perch. But my sheets of metal were put up to stop the dog peeing in the aviaries so the sacrifice was worth it. couldn't stand dog pee on my floors , yuk.

We get so much pleasure watching our birds on the aviary floor, have wire to the ground and have never had a mice or snake problem. Maybe just lucky, but I think good hygiene practice is a big step towards keeping mice away and as far as snakes go, if they are a problem where he lives then he may have to think about preventative measures otherwise see how it goes. The best way to learn is to get out there and have a go, I dare say this will not be the last aviary he ever builds just a stepping stone to things bigger and better!

She is trying to talk him into getting another one for a play mate for Jake, I said I do not think so as there is far to much poops to pick up now.

If viewing the birds is a priority then use plastic sheeting HOWEVER.............to be considered are the costs of losing birds due to mice contaminating their food supply.
November 19, 201113 yr Hi Dillster, we seem to have hi-jacked your post. Â Have you and Dad made any more progress on you aviary? Do you have birds for it yet or are you getting them later? That's the exciting bit actually releasing some birds into your aviary after all the hard work.
