Went to a pet shop at a local westfield. Decided to find some budgie treats for my new babies cos they aren't eating anything apart from just seeds. Anyways got 2 sticks which has seeds coated with honey and a calcium bit on the top. Cost me $7 / pack of 2 sticks. Went to coles and decided to walk past the pet isle and gues what their $3.45 each branded one or $2.99 coles branded. Now i know.

I wouldn't even bother spending any money on those things. I think they're designed to make you feel good about buying a "treat" for your birds, whether they have any discernible nutritional value is very doubtful in my opinion, too processed for me. Try natural veggie alternatives like corn on the cob (just as sweet), carrot sticks and the like.

Junk food for budgies..........dont waste your money anyway

 

Do you know they are glued together with animal glues...........all they have to do is add a quarter teaspoon of honey to call it a honey seed treat

Lol should have asked here before buying them. Any other tips on treats. My budgies won't eat anything apart from seeds. No fruits no veges. Yesterday i gave them some bananas rolled in the seeds but no luck. I tried hand feeding one of them but it simply won't eat.

It takes a while for birds to try new things, you will have to keep trying a bit of greens etc each day until they start to pick at it

. Once one tries it the others usually do as well. Mine love corn on the cob, I started with about a 2cm slice ( so it's not wasted ), give a new piece each day until they try it, then you can add other vegies etc.

I agree with the other comments on here, persistence and patience is the key. Put a vegetable plate of treats out for them, sprinkle it with seed, leave it for two days then remove it. Repeat this process every few days. They will take to it eventually. Once one does, the others will follow quickly.

Leave it for 2 days. Really? I read somewhere to remove any uneaten fruits and vege after 1 hour. Anyways i'll do my best at trying.

Yeah same here I take mine out at night. It goes off otherwise. I was told by my avian vet.

Some vegies are okay to leave in the aviary a little longer but most fruit goes off quickly.......I do half a day for most fruit except citrus...that can stay in the aviary a day or two.....lemons and oranges and mandarins cut in half. Sweetcorn goes too fast to worry about but if left too long can go sour ( off ) .

Soft food fed late afternoon and left overnight and removed. Fresh batch again later afternoon.

Some fruit and vegies doesnt last long enough to be worried about. The budgies eat it fast

I gave my budgies finally chopped carrot and brocholli mixed with a little seeds and it was funny seeing them sorting out the seeds from the veges. But i am preety sure they got a taste of it. Tomorrow morning i am giving them seeds mixed with baby food. I just had to ask. Is it okay to remove all their food at maybe 10pm and then feed them at 6am or is it to long.

never leave birds with out food just to try and get them to eat something new

birds need seed constantly

also try them with sweet potatoe it just needs a wash and then leave it their will last more than few days unless they eat it lol

try mixed veggies from coles brand just leave to defrost a little spoon full at a time and put on a lid of coffee jar dont put seed on it they will eat it soon enough

Agree with GB .............never remove food. No need to mix seed with baby food mush either...it will just go off quicker.

and to be honest id not even feed my baby baby food let alone my birds try scrambling an egg WELL COOKED and grating bit carrot into it i dont know a bird that has ever passed up scrambled eggs

I have never had a bird knock back seeding grasses...just make sure that it is not sprayed with weed killer. I have heaps available around me and you don't need to be in a rush to pull it out if you put it in without the leaves. The birds will shred it long before it needs to be pulled out. I might try and upload some photos of thier favorite varieties tomorrow.

well i just voted that info as completely useless but thats my opinion the only truth in that is a budgie will not eat something when it gets hungry

Thanks for all the information guys. 2 jars of baby food going down the drain. My budgies are happy eating seeds for now. I'll keep trying and let's see where we go to.

It took me so long to get my budgie to eat anything other then seeds that I nearly gave up through sheer frustration. But I found that if I was nibbling on a carrot and he was on my shoulder, he would climb down and eat it. I think it's because being part of his 'flock' he thought that if I could eat it, then so should he. Sadly this lead in to him thinking that my bowl of corn flakes were now his to share as well. Picking budgie feathers out of your corn flakes is not the easiest thing to do in the morning (and you learn to eat corn flakes dry lol)

 

Keep it up, and I really recommend eating the veggies where the birds can see you, and even maybe letting them sit on your shoulder while you eat it. It really worked a treat for me.

There are so many rip off cases in pet sotres, I think, government should regulate them better. And it happens not only with prices on food, but with animal health as well. Store staff advertise you something new and expensive, after buying all those accessories and devices you understand they are absolutely useless. I think it is better to read consumer reviews and leave comments about such cases on http://www.pissedconsumer.com/consumer-reviews/pet-stores.html

You've gotten a lot of good advice about trying different vegetables. One thing I was going to suggest is to put a dish on the floor of the cage with some wet leaves on it. (Like collard greens, or spinach, etc) Then sit back and watch the show! I think it's pretty universal that budgies LOVE to rub themselves all over wet leaves.

 

Then it's just a short step to them taking a nibble of the leaf...

 

 

 

You can even clip the wet leaves to the bars of the cage, and watch them doing contortions up higher.

My Birds love grass ,I often put some clippings on the floorand they go crazy over it.
