October 6, 201113 yr I think that single mum needs a reward once the kids leave, maybe a nice holiday to relax. It really is amazing how some birds can just have the strength to do that, and those chicks look lovely. I would snap this one up in a second, just a beautiful colour and pattern, and the photo is a lovely one. Greywings are very cute.....but this one is my favourite out of the three ( well 2 GW's and a dilute ) Oh what a little beauty, Kaz! That's really sad about not having a test, I've been reading up on feather dusters and it seems that people are divided right down the middle about them. If you do keep them alive, do they feel pain or can they have a good life? Edited October 6, 201113 yr by Jabberwocky92
October 6, 201113 yr Author Here is the Supermum ....lone mother of the 6 chicks ( excuse her messy feeder face ) Here's some more of the 6 babies Both of these are fosters and both bite me HENS !! The Dad that passed away was YF skyblue. Its didnt look like any of his 4 chicks were YF, but I see possibly one of the babies may be a YF grey ? That's really sad about not having a test, I've been reading up on feather dusters and it seems that people are divided right down the middle about them. If you do keep them alive, do they feel pain or can they have a good life? Its not us that keep them alive exactly.....they have a limited lifespan so at some point we know they will die. Some sooner than others. Some breeders euthanase them knowing whats in store. Pain ? no different to any other budgie. We have some FD topics on this forum.
October 6, 201113 yr Cool back the excellent quality of photos we have come to expect from you Kaz Love the chickies! And at the risk of sounding like a cracked record - Where are the photos of the 6 SWBC Auction birds (with blurbs) and How about some photos of the birds Liv gave you and Yes I too would love to see what you current breeding set up looks like???!
October 6, 201113 yr Looks like Mum is doing a great job Kaz.. with your feeds and maybe the bigger chicks helping out shortly they should be great.
October 7, 201113 yr Author And at the risk of sounding like a cracked record - Where are the photos of the 6 SWBC Auction birds (with blurbs) and How about some photos of the birds Liv gave you and Yes I too would love to see what you current breeding set up looks like???! I havent taken any new photos of those birds in show cages etc...auction birds and Livs. Flu has me doing very little apart from trying to breathe without coughing up my lungs. I released most of Livs birds into a quarantine aviary apart from a couple who are currently in breeding cages and a small handful of recessives that went to RIP. The only photo I have at hand of one of the auction birds right now is the Cec Gearing hen Ken bought Here she is from Cec's grey line and will be put to a large grey cock I have Ken calls BLOCKHEAD Other photos will have to wait.

Great looking hen Kaz, I would be happy to have her in the my flock
October 7, 201113 yr Author The Dad that passed away was YF skyblue. Its didnt look like any of his 4 chicks were YF, but I see possibly one of the babies may be a YF grey ? One out of the four chicks is indeed a yellowface grey. Love that hen Kaz. She was a bargain price at $170 considering the cocks from that grey line have gone for well over $2,500.
October 7, 201113 yr Okay is it my screen or am I beginning to see cinnamon now everywhere?! But I'm assuming that she is Opaline Sky hen .... ? $170 is a good deal for her, even by WA standards of bargains. I have no doubt she will chuck beautiful chickies for you Kaz. Well Done Ken for choosing her
October 7, 201113 yr Author Okay is it my screen or am I beginning to see cinnamon now everywhere?! Believe it or not Renee there ARE classes in shows for cinnamons LOL .......do you still have that aversion for cinnamon ?
October 7, 201113 yr I don't care what variety I bred I just worry about breeding the bird, whether, cinnamon, opaline or what. Anyway this year the are trying out opaline AOS or something like that and normal spangle classes which will be good for me. Because I am always breeding opaline spangles and judges don't like them on the show bench which I think is lousy.
October 7, 201113 yr Okay is it my screen or am I beginning to see cinnamon now everywhere?! Believe it or not Renee there ARE classes in shows for cinnamons LOL .......do you still have that aversion for cinnamon ? Yes I know, the AOSV Class or Cinnamon Class. But yes you are right, I do have a certain bias against Cinnamons and Opalines but only because they are such pervasive varieties - I regard them as a rather difficult weed to eradicate, like couch grass or similar: no matter how hard you try they just keep coming back. But of course I am aware how useful Cinnamon can be to help with Suffusion which why I tolerate it in my Spangles and Double Factor Spangles or Lutes; and of course it is running through my Recessive Pied lines but I don't mind that. But I swear to god if I ever bred an Opaline Cinnamon I will have a major hissy fit!
October 9, 201113 yr Author This is another bird bought at the auction........my husband chose and bought this cinnamon visual violet spangle bred by Fran and John Mac loughlan $ 110 also a green opaline split dilute cock bred by BBC's nubbly $110 and ....a pied hen of Jan McMahons $140 and a grey green cock of Mike Gearing $100 a couple of photos I havent got yet of a bird or two..... October 9, 201113 yr Author The single mother is doing well...........feeding her six babies and herself. 5 out of 6 appear to be hens. single mother still doesnt have a name......after this huge effort I think she needs one Edited October 9, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
October 9, 201113 yr Thank you for all the lovely photos Kaz I really like the Spangle (even though it is Cinnamon!) and the Dommie Pied!
October 11, 201113 yr Author Looks like Mum is doing a great job Kaz.. with your feeds and maybe the bigger chicks helping out shortly they should be great. She's an amazing Mum with what she has acchieved all on her own and she still looks great too......decent weight on her so she isnt suffering............chicks all well fed and thriving. I am no longer topping them up. there's seed in the box and I feel seed in most of their crops. Suggestions for a name for her ??? Edited October 11, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
October 11, 201113 yr Nice auction birds and good prices too Kaz, oh and lovely chickies too. Hey Renee you some of the best birds are cinnamon opaline. I use to be like you but I don't care any more because you need cinnamon for the feather and you need opaline for size and for spot size without both varieties it would be hard to improve. I do find them a pain sometimes but only when I breed a cinnamon spangle or opaline spangle and only because judges don't like them but now that they are trying out cin and opaline spangle classes that makes me happy and I hope they bring it in forever. The only thing I hate about opaline is they do seem to bring out the flecking and it is hard to get a clean V.

I breed DF Spangles so I have no problem breeding Cinnamon Opaline Spangles! Just not in my Green line and not in my Blue line .... even though I have a bit of Opaline in the Violet series As I have said earlier, it is almost impossible to not breed either .... they are very pervasive!
October 12, 201113 yr Author Two eldest chicks in the single mothers nestbox fledged today and as its warming up some I will leave them out.
October 12, 201113 yr There are a couple of choices, but the one I am leaning towards is a variation of a theme of mine. I once named a bird after a Saint. I did this as the bird happily took on what I thought was ad turned out to be a lost cause. I named the bird after St Jude - the Patron Saint of Lost Causes. So I have a bird named St Jude. Since this bird is doing such a great job as a single mother, I suggest that she be named after the Patron Saint of single mothers, who since she does not really exist as the church would not want single mothers, but most prayers are offered to Saint Margaret. So I think you should name this bird who has done a "miraculos" job "St Margaret.
October 12, 201113 yr Francis, patron saint of birds. (She's looked out for all her's now and future. l.o.l.)
