I know there are a lot of nesting materials out there, but I want to know the best. And what I mean by "best", I mean the cleanest, the safest, something that wil keep eggs from rolling about ( unless mother moves them of course ), etc. etc ...

I am preparing myself for breeding. I have done this before, but I just want to find the top nesting materials.

 

I have searched the other questions and the FAQ's, some mention some nesting materials, however they don't tell you which is better out of all of them.

its really a personal choice i know if i could afford it id choose red gum shavings as they also keep mite at bay

for the same reason i use the citrus Ginni pig n rabbit bedding from pet shop a small packet lasts me full round of 18 nests its 5.00 for the small one

other wize i buy a bulk of just shavings for 16.00 a bale lasts for ever put it on floor flight if i see waters got in in to works a treat

GB hi have you tried oaten chaff (horse feed) i know of a couple of breeders down here use it me i use untreated pine shavings direct from the sawmill Cheers TAZ D

I've tried them all..............and now I wont go past using flakey bran. Its edible so its safe. Its a bedding the hens cant remove from the nestbox. It stays where its put including making a depression in it for a concave.

 

If I run out of flakey bran I use dry porridge oats ( normal or quick oats ) ............also edible so safe.

okay, what is it, where do you get it? Is it a cereal? I am using good old fashioned shavings.

 

Answered my own question I think, a horse feed?

Where can I get the flakey bran from ? I think I might try get some and try it out, it sounds pretty good.

Flakey bran is from stockfeed places and good bird supply stores. I bought a 40 kilo sack from a stockfeed place for $26

the supermarket its brecky cereal

 

or maybe not lol

kaz i thought it was for humans in the morning

 

i tried porridge otes but i dont like it attracts to many bugs weevils included

as for horse chaff i add a bit to the cages when bubbys come out in nappy cage but not in nests anymore

I dont have issues with moths in nests but in case I run a mozzie zapper so they dont take hold in the birdroom anyway.

Pine shavings too many moths for me with bran but then I don't do the mozzie zapper thing.

I havent run my mozzie zapper for over a year but still no moths in my bran nesting materials

Kaz, can you show us a photo of the flaky bran? I'm wondering if we call it something different over here.

 

Also, I've noticed that the porridge oats tend to clump up, kind of like bits of granola. Does the flaky bran do that, or does it stay flaky?

Now that you've asked that I am wondering the same thing.

If its like the stuff I use its "rice hulls" and its very dry , I tend to mix it with other things , wood shavings or lucern chaff.
