I was wondering, because I know how unhealthy a pet shop bird is and because I know where they com from, I was wondering if it is at all possible to breed the bad stuff out of a bird from a pet shop ... Can I ?

And if I can, how ?

Charly, not all pet shop birds come from poorly educated back yard breeders. Some come from top breeders.

The ability of a bird to produce another bird lesser, equial or better than it's self is in the genes.

I started out with pet shop birds and learnt my craft on them (yep still learning...) Some of my birds are sold through weekend markets.

To answer one of your questions... you can breed bad stuff from a $6000 bird as much as a $20 bird. It's just that the $6000 bird will more often breed good birds rather than bad.

You can't automatically assume that pet shop birds are unhealthy. There are some bad pet shops out there, but there are also a lot of good ones. And if you are looking for breeding stock, whether it's for pet type or show type, the last thing I would do is pick an unhealthy one and hope to "improve" it by breeding it.

What kind of "bad stuff" are you talking about?

Hi Charly, I SELL my excess birds to my local pet shop, which I vetted pretty well beforehand.

I would hate to think my birds are considered unhealthy etc. it's a case of buyer beware. Not just from pet shops either !!

If your talking, small birds, poor posture, etc if paired with better quality type bird you can improve their offspring somewhat. BUT if you start with a sickly bird, unless you improve its health problems to begin with through quarantine and treatment for it's problems FORGET BREEDING with that bird until it's in A1. condition. I may add, I'm talking pet types here not show birds.
