Feather Plucking Hen Advise Needed

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a pair who have successfully raised 5 chicks. Four have fledged and one still in the nest. The hen is feverishly clearing the nest and has egg bum ready to lay next round. Unfortunately she has started to pluck the feathers from the back of the head of this last chick. The chick is 4 weeks old tomorrow. Is it safe removed this chick to the cafe floor. He is 80 percent feathered.

What treatment is best for the bald spot on the back of the head. The skin is not broken at all, just devoid of feathers.

Your advise would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Dave....this action is a pre cursor to the hen attacking this chick.....remove to an icecream tub on cage floor..........dont worry about the head feathers...........new ones will grown in very quickly all on their own.

I cannot remember who gave me this tip,but the remedy worked for me last year.I had a double factor yellow face white spangle hen that started plucking the down off the chicks,so i rubbed minced garlic all over the affected area of chicks, the down started to grow back and there where no more blood spots after a few days,it works. The hen has since died and so far this year i have no feather plucking ,fingers crossed.
