Posted September 11, 201113 yr At the moment this is my weekly feeding schedule, im constantly review it to see if there are anything that I should add or things I should take away. Can i have your thoughts and oppinions on my feeding routine please for my two pet type budgies, Hamish who is a young cock bird who is just over 1 year and Molly who is over 3 years and we think suffered from a lack of calcium as she has no strength in her wings to fly even though she tries (drops like a stone though) and also possibly has rickets. September 13, 201113 yr That all sounds good. At first glance, I thought you were going to list some long complicated rotation schedule, but on reading it, you are basically feeding fresh veggies during the week, your mash, as you call it, on weekends, and adding apple cider vinegar a few days a week. It looks to me like a nice healthy diet. If you are concerned about her calcium levels, I wouldn't just rely on cuttlebone. You might consider a liquid calcium added to the water. And one thing you didn't list, I always have a mineral block in my cages. There is usually calcium in those, too. If your egg biscuit mix includes the shells, you have some calcium there, as well.
September 15, 201113 yr Author Mineral block? Is there any i should look for specifically as I know some are made of plaster of paris?
September 15, 201113 yr Blocks _ I would go for Iodine and Calcium. Question: why the Apple Cider Vinegar in the water. (I know the answer but curious why you use it)
September 16, 201113 yr Author After loads of research I came to the conclusion to use it after reading that it has many medical properties and also as a natural antibiotic for birds or something like that, so now i use it regularly in my birds water. Also I find that during the warmer months when they tend to bath in thier water bowls it gives the feathers a nice healthy shine to them, and it being vinegar its probably good at keeping the mites at bay too as I used to always have a problem with red feather mites, but since they bath in this stuff too I haven't seen them for a while.

He, he Good try The reason we add it to the water is to raise the acidity levels so that it combats Megabacteria, very prevalent in budgies, which is a yeast.
September 17, 201113 yr Yep thats right. Now days we call it AGY (Avian Gastric Yeast Desease) In the old days we used to give oranges to the birds. The citus acid did the same thing. Apple Cider vinegar also has a probotic quality as well. Edited September 17, 201113 yr by Daz
September 19, 201113 yr That sounds great! lots of variety but without complication. I am just interested why you put apple cider vinger in every couple of days??
