Posted August 25, 201113 yr An interesting little video of Lutino's being judged at an English show. Show cages look a lot smaller than ours, and I was amazed at how they picked up the show boxes to inspect the birds. http://s257.photobucket.com/albums/hh201/Bladders/Hastings%20BS%20Open%20Show%202011/?action=view¤t=BeverleyHuttJudgingTheLutinos.mp4

August 27, 201113 yr Also a good way to change the light falling on the bird to check for a) suffusion/colour b ) eye colour if your unsure. I personally would be pretty offended if that was me in the video and I had picked the bird up to get some better light on it and was suddenly suspected of favouring a bird because of who bred it. Oh AND I don't want anything in front of the bird when I'm judging it. We had a look at the English drinkers and I was not happy with it obsuring the birds outline when it was on that particular perch. The ones we have now are bad enough. August 28, 201113 yr As nubbly stated picking up the show cage allows the opportunity to view the bird in a different light, particularly important for the ino varieties. It provides an opportunity to check body colour suffusion, eye colour and tail quill and flight colours eg cinnamon greywings it also provides different perspectives to the bird particularly useful in the top down view to gauge substance. Most judges will use this technique to some extent. i doubt that ring reading is an issue, if you ever judge at a budgie show your focus is elsewhere and apart from checking the ring colour in young bird classes you simply don't have time to read rings. The UK standard show cage size is within millimetres of the Australian cage, they, on average, just have bigger budgies and that is why the cage looks smaller.
