okay, another check of the birds before I put them to bed and this is where things stand

Pair 1 - Caesar and GreyGreen Hen - 5 large eggs so far - 4 look fertile

Pair 3 - Son of Dumber (RIP) and daughter of Twitch - 9 big eggs. Hard to see over a smothering mother

Pair 4 - Dumb and Light Green Spangle Hen - 4 eggs and one layed off a perch, so only 4 (perch laying = broken egg)

Pair 5 - Lutino Cock to Albino Hen - Getting split up tomorrow - probably

Pair 6 - Opaline Grey to a Sky Opaline Spangle Hen - getting split up tomorrow - definitely

Pair 7 - Grey Cock to an Opaline Grey Spangle Hen - 7 eggs - majority look fertile

Pair 8 - Cobalt Cinnamon Cock to a Sky Cinnamon Hen - 2 eggs - stopping there, though both look fertile.

Pair 9 - YF Opaline Sky Cock to a Light Green Spangle Hen - 4 eggs

Pair 10 - GreyGreen Cinnamon Cock to a Double Factor Yellow Spangle Hen - 4 eggs - 3 viable and looking fertile

Pair 11 - Green Cock to a GreyGreen Hen - 7 smallish eggs with nearly all looking fertile

Pair 12 - Green Cock to a Grey/Blue Opaline Dominant Pied Hen - 5 eggs - but one has a dent in the side but may be alright.

Pair 15 - Violet Opaline Cock to a Grey Hen - 3 eggs

With the weekend finally here I will swap a few pairings, as well as hopefully get some eggs hatching.

It is meant to be a hot day tomorrow, so we will see how things go. About 28-30 degress so I might put a shade umbrella up to keep the breeding room cooler. Hope there will be a wind so the whirlybird on top of the breeding room will be in full action, sucking out the hot air.

About 28-30 degress

Gee here in WA id have to rug up and id be freezing, you should try looking after the budgies in constant summer days of 40+

New seed, corn, spinach, water with calcivet today. All looks good. Should be a busy time this week.

In off topic news, my little dog Tess is at the vet's with Pancreatitis. No guarantee she will come home. Birds were a good distraction.

Sorry to hear about Tess, Dave. Please be heartened by the fact that our cavalier Cricket had the same condition and its treatable and not life threatening. I hope its the same in her case :)

We have to weigh her food and put enzyme powder on it for her to be able to digest and process her nutrition...there are negatives to this condition but it isnt a death sentence.

I know that is it treatable. The biggest concern with Tess is that since the pancreas is responsible for producing insulin, which breaks down sugar, and the pancreas is the organ suffering, then her sugar has show up. It went as high as 28 yesterday, due to her dehydration and pancreatitis. Today it is down to 17, so that is good. Hopefully it falls to where it should be, in the 7-9 range. If not, she may be on insulin injections everyday, which is not nice for her. The vet texted me and told me she is much more alert today, which is a good sign. More interactive, which means she is returning to her old self. I pray that she will.

In better news, the little chick that hatched yesterday has a full crop and her Mum (St Jude) is doing a good job. It is funny, as there were 4 eggs in there, 2 which looked fertile. Mum threw one infertile one out and ate the other one. Only 1 egg left. This is St Jude's second clutch ever and she only had 1 chick before. Not a very fertile mother, but a good foster mother.

So two chicks have now been born. Quite a few maiden hens so I expect the fertility in the first round to be lower than the second round. Here is how it stands right now.

Pair 4 - Dumb and Light Green Spangle Hen - 4 eggs

Pair 5 - GreyGreen Cinnamon Cock to Green Hen - just put in yesterday - pics to come.

Hey Dave it sounds promising with all those eggs.

Mate have you found any difference in the quality of the chicks that come from

the smaller eggs compared to the larger ones. I just wonder if the size of the eggs makes

any difference in how good the chicks will be. I have some small and large eggs at the

moment, which I'v never had before.

Cheers, Geoff

Geoff.

Can't say I have really taken too much notice.

I will look at it more carefully now to try to see if there is any difference. Good question though. Have others found any difference?

I don't like seeing eggs of different shapes and sizes. Those big eggs I find are rarely fertile, either that or they seem to addle. I don't like the pointy ones either or the rough textured ones. All of these things for mine point to a hen that either needs a rest, is too old, or has a problem or deficiency.

If a hen lays a clutch of normal sized eggs with smooth shells I figure that the hen is healthy and she is a breeder.

So sorry to hear about Tess, i hope she has a speedy recovery, some good news with the birds though.

How is Tess going Dave?

Sounds like things are going well in the bird room Dave.

No more chicks have hatched today, so hopefully tomorrow. A lot of maiden hens so we will see.

I dropped in and saw Tess today. She has lost some weight, both good and bad. She is more responsive and she ate some chicken this morning, her first solid food in 4 days. She is still on the fluid drip, but she is improving. Her sugar is down and she will probably be coming home Thursday afternoon. Mum will babysit her friday, then i am off for 2 weeks on school holidays, so i can watch her then. She has improved greatly though int he last 24-36 hours.

Sad that she is sick but good news that she is starting to do well and that she will be coming home soon.
