August 31, 201113 yr Author Kaz takes much better pics than I do. I only grabbed some quick snaps as i transferred him from the aviary to the breeding room, so he is sitting in a carry cage, not perching. Anyway, here are the snaps. Quiche photos and an update.
September 1, 201113 yr Author Today's Update Pair 1 - Caesar and GreyGreen Hen - preening but still no eggs yet Pair 2 - Twitch and Albino Hen - 2 eggs now Pair 3 - Son of Dumber (RIP) and daughter of Twitch - 3 eggs Pair 4 - Dumb and Light Green Spangle Hen - preening but still no eggs yet Pair 5 - Lutino Cock to Albino Hen - preening but no egg yet Pair 6 - Opaline Grey to a Sky Opaline Spangle Hen - no preening yet so this will be the last pair to have eggs I think Pair 7 - Grey Cock to an Opaline Grey Spangle Hen - 3 eggs Pair 8 - Cobalt Cinnamon Cock to a Sky Cinnamon Hen - 3 eggs Pair 9 - YF Opaline Sky Cock to a Light Green Spangle Hen - 2 eggs Pair 10 - GreyGreen Cinnamon Cock to a Double Factor Yellow Spangle Hen - preening but still no egg yet Pair 11 - Green Cock to a GreyGreen Hen - 3 eggs Pair 12 - Green Cock to a Grey/Blue Opaline Dominant Pied Hen - confirmed 1 egg Pair 13 - Grey Cock to a GreyGreen Cinnamon Opaline Hen - first egg layed Pair 14 - Quiche (GreyGreen Opaline Spangle Cock) to an Albino Hen - just introduced people - give them time...please!!!! So far 18 eggs layed, more than last breeding mainly due to time of year, but no idea on fertility yet - too early to candle and I do not like to candle to disturb the hen anyway.
September 1, 201113 yr I originally thought that 14 days from mating to egg, but not anymore. New hens are laying eggs now and it is not possible coincidence could come into play, so I think 8 days is now the minimum for egg laying. Dave, I'm thinking I have read before that the sperm can stay viable inside the hen for fourteen days. If so, then I suppose that any given one of your first eggs could be fertilized by unknown cocks? You have very nice looking birds. I like all the spangle. Maybe you could name Dumb's mate "Stupid", and then their chick could be "Completely Hopeless" !
September 1, 201113 yr Author Maybe you could name Dumb's mate "Stupid", and then their chick could be "Completely Hopeless" ! I came back from Kaz's place in Perth where from a number of breeder's over there I purchased a few birds. From a great man name Hans I purchased a number of birds, but the three that I named Dumb and Dumber, and Jester were personal favourites. All were named for their inability to perch in showcages when I want to take a simple picture. I name birds on personality usually, so Dumb, Dumber, Jester, Humphrey, Twitch and a few others are all named by their personality. I am not sure stupidity is a dominant gene, so we will see how it plays out - LOL!!!
September 2, 201113 yr and Quiche was named because his mother was called Omelette Omelette was named because she consistently laid 12-13 egg clutches. Enough eggs for an omelette Edited September 2, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
September 2, 201113 yr I named one of my boys Harvey Norman, when I stuck him in a breeding cage there was " no interest".

September 2, 201113 yr Author Today's Update Pair 1 - Caesar and GreyGreen Hen - preening but still no eggs yet Pair 2 - Twitch and Albino Hen - 2 eggs now Pair 3 - Son of Dumber (RIP) and daughter of Twitch - 3 big eggs Pair 4 - Dumb and Light Green Spangle Hen - they have their first egg Pair 5 - Lutino Cock to Albino Hen - preening but no egg yet Pair 6 - Opaline Grey to a Sky Opaline Spangle Hen - no preening yet so this will be the last pair to have eggs I think Pair 7 - Grey Cock to an Opaline Grey Spangle Hen - 3 eggs Pair 8 - Cobalt Cinnamon Cock to a Sky Cinnamon Hen - 3 eggs Pair 9 - YF Opaline Sky Cock to a Light Green Spangle Hen - 3 eggs Pair 10 - GreyGreen Cinnamon Cock to a Double Factor Yellow Spangle Hen - preening but still no egg yet Pair 11 - Green Cock to a GreyGreen Hen - 4 smallish eggs Pair 12 - Green Cock to a Grey/Blue Opaline Dominant Pied Hen - confirmed 1 egg Pair 13 - Grey Cock to a GreyGreen Cinnamon Opaline Hen - first egg layed Pair 14 - Seperated - explanation below. For Pair 14 I took Quiche to my avian vet as there was a concern about some feathers. Anyway, long and the short of it is that it looks like there is some French Moult there, but also something else. The vet is not sure what it is. He took some feathers and he was going to send them for samples. He did not know if it was environmental, genetic, stress related or what. His advice was put him down with a average hen in a seperate environment and see what is produced. DO NOT put him down in the same location as the other birds or with a good hen. Also i should watch the birds he travelled with to see if there are any signs, to see if they are carriers and the stress of travel induced this or if it was them. The vet will keep the feathers he removed refridgerated and they can be sent for studying later to see if it is simply french moult, or the polyoma virus or something else. So this is the plan Pair 14 will be this Violet Opaline Cock to an Albino hen - they will go down tomorrow and we will go from there. Pair 15 will be breeding in the garage - where I have previously bred birds before, in there own environment. Quiche is in in excellent condition apart from his feathers. Quiche - greygreen opaline spangle cock will be paired to an experienced hen who is a White DF Spangle, who once was paired to Dumber (RIP) and upon his death still proceeded to produce 5 fertile eggs, raising 3 of the offsrping solo on her own (2 were fostered). She masks opaline and cobalt. So there you have it. Quiche might be fine in 6 months, a proud father, or he might be passing on a few issues. We will find out. Really disappointing. It happens sometimes with great birds, they do not travel well. Quiche was great in Perth but he has never really been excellent here when I look back on it. Shame really, breaks my heart. Putting him down is so hard to imagine so I am hoping for the best. Very sad. Sorry Kaz. I feel I am letting you down here. So 21 eggs but the Quiche news takes the shine off things that even getting my rings in the mail cannot fix.
September 4, 201113 yr At the time Quiche went to Sydney he was moulting...we were concerned about him travelling while moulting. BUT I wonder if he has feather quill mites ?
September 4, 201113 yr Author I suggested that to the vet, and he pulled some feathers out and looked at the ends of them, and that is how he reached his diagnosis. If he had feather quill mites than AIL should be effective shouldn't it?
September 4, 201113 yr A combination of topical ail and s76 in the drinking water my avian vet told me. Feather quill mites are inside the feather quill in the blood supply to the feather. Edited September 4, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
September 4, 201113 yr Author I agree, more info needed here Kaz. can I get these from the pet store?
September 4, 201113 yr Topical is a descriptive term that means applied externally..........AIL is applied externally. S76 is a vetafarm product used in the bird water. By using both you are working both outside and inside the bird. Edited September 4, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
