Posted August 14, 201113 yr Can anyone here settle a debate .. rope perches should they be banned ? anyone had any problems with them or other rope based toys such as those often sold in pet shops ? Thanks in advance
August 14, 201113 yr Nope, don't need to be banned but need to watched closely for wear and tear. The toys that have the lengths that hang down (tassel type bits) should always be cut off short, to reduce the risk of getting caught/tangled up. I've never had any problems with any rope products.
August 14, 201113 yr A lot of people with pet budgies use them. I dont. My thoughts are they are not really able to be fully cleaned in a healthy way like a wooden perch you can sandpaper and clean and disinfect. I have also seen rope perches fraying and those threads hanging off can then be a danger.

August 14, 201113 yr I have one rope perch in my inside budgies cage and my dads cockatiel and princess parrot cage have some too. We clean them by soaking them in anti bacteria/disinfectant then rinsing them under water. Every couple if months we buy new ones as they do fray. A toy I have in my outside aviary is rope that has tassels and ive never seen them get caught or tangled. But yes, we get natural branches from Churchill park and use them. Budgies love eating them too!
August 14, 201113 yr A toy I have in my outside aviary is rope that has tassels and ive never seen them get caught or tangled. I have lost three budgies in the past to hangings from fringes on the end of rope perches in the aviary....anything with a fringe longer than one inch or 25mm will catch a budgie...........two of mine were found hung by the fringing tight around the neck...the other caught his wing and flapped frantically till it died from the stress of it. Now anything like that the fringing gets cut off real short. ive never seen them get caught or tangled until the first time you find one hung by the neck and dead. Do yourself a favour ...go into the aviary and cut off the fringing.

August 14, 201113 yr Author Thanks so far to everyone who has replied. Agree re the tassles and fraying, comes down to being attentive to your birds and keeping things like that checked. The other party to this debate has claimed they have had birds die from the threads getting into the gut. Not that l am saying it cannot happen but I have never heard of it and it seems to be a very passionate hobby horse of theirs. I do make rope twine perches or swings BUT reguarly change them by making new ones or varities and throwing away the old and have done so for 30 years. I will not use the coloured blocks etc do not trust the paint / dyes. Have seen birds die of obvious neuro toxic poisoning (lead!) and had several vets tell me the same over the years. Keep it all natural as far as is possible. Edited August 14, 201113 yr by Tan
August 15, 201113 yr Calm down... I am allowed to believe what ever I want! From my perspective it sound like your all having a go at me. I'm not gonna cut the tassels cause I want my budgies to have fun... Sorry if you all think I'm a bad budgie owner. And also, my fringes/tassels are 3 cm MAX.

Pull your head in Taylor Noone is having a go at you. It would be neglectful of us here if it wasnt pointed out that these fringes have issues. AND when I said about trimming it shorter its to prevent things we have experienced. If you carefully read GB's comment you will realise she also didnt believe it would be an issue until it actually was. So you can believe what you want but I am sure if your budgies were hung too you wouldnt rush on here and say we were right about it. Edited August 15, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
