hey guys i thought id start my own 2011 breeding journal after seeing so many other good journals on here i thoiught id have a stab at it. im hoping for a good season this time around last season wasnt particularly successful, i have four pairs to put down this time around i think ill aim for one round to begin with if i think the birds are up to it ill go another, so here they are tell me what you guys think and if anyone could give me a clue as to what i can expect chickwise that would be awesome.

pair one: yf grey normal cock x yf grey opaline hen

cocks still quite young hes just over 10months old i ahvnt put these two down just yet ithought id give him untill the start of next month though he has already paired himself to this hen in flight.

pair two: light green normal cock x dark green normal hen

cock has good directional feather, hen has size and mask so im hoping thay compliment each other

pair three: light green normal cock x grey green opaline hen

probably my best pair these two i just got him three months ago from a local guy who is quite good friends with the breeder whos line i buy from he was looking to get out of budgies and back into finches so i brought him for $25, the hen is of the same lines as him and im hoping these two will produce some cracker chicks

pair four: yf grey opaline cock x yf blue opaline hen

cocks of okay quality and same blood lines as my other birds though not as good. hen is just a pet type but is a great mother so i thought id keep these two as a foster pair.

at this stage i want to try establish a good normal line, im hoping to get a few good hens this season and next season i would like to buy in a good quality cock to put across several hens. ill keep the updates flowing as things happen ill also try and get some pics up for everyone to see. cheers kochy

Good pairs kochy23!

She is sideways on the perch and thus you cannot see all of her tail :D

Lol! At the start I'm like, " what's up with her tail"!

But yeah shes on her side

Wow!

Ive never seen snow apart from when my family and I go tobogganing!

Good thing you took the budgies inside and away from the snow! Then you would have had budgie popsicles!

In Perth we get at least four metres of snow overnight in winter.:P No as far as we are concerned there is no such thing as snow in perth.

No im just kidding, i cant stand the cold anyway.

I don't like the cold either. After going on a cruise (my 2nd) in July around the south pacific and Vanuatu, you get used to waking up to 26 degree days! Real shock though when I got back to 2-5 degree Melbourne.

Hope you get some more eggs kochy!

I love the boy from pair two. He's a cutie and knows it! Snow.... sheesh, not gonna happen in Brisbane. I'd love to see it. I've only seen it twice down in Thredbo years ago. I think it's darn freezing today and it's 23C outside.

id love to have a 23c day right about now moglet am over the cold, but hey springs less than a month away so cant complain. 1 more egg to pair 4 taday

hey moglet i used to live in brisbane and that humidity and tropical heat really makes it hot.

Yeah, I'm a country NSW gal but have horribly acclimatised and am a biiiig sook now :)

My birds are loving the weather though, they are all showing off to each other and making 'friends' LOL. I think that's why I've had so much success with babies so early. We really only had about 2 weeks of cold cold winter, and that was max low of about 6C overnight and 16-18 in the day.

February is the month I detest up here. The rain and the humidity drive you insane....

How do the budgies handle the really cold? Do you get the twice a year heavy moult I seem to get?

hey guys its been awhile since ive updated this post, i lost the hen from pair 3 which was a bit of a tradgedy she was eggbound and was sitting on three eggs i came home at lunch last monday to get her to the vet but it was too late. :( im hoping i moved her eggs quickly enough to pair four which has 7 eggs by themselves! i put a spare hen down with the cock from pair three so im hoping that they will lay this week nothing from pair two at this stage. i think ive made a big misatake in culling other birds before the breeding season i havnt allowed enough fosters or back up birds, and the fact i only have four cages available has really limited what i can acheive still im hoping that i will come a way with a few chicks this season. ive been in contact with my mentor in the last week and her advice was to make sure i had more cages and birds available for next season and hold onto the worser birds as fosters a bit longer. im still relatively new to it all so its just a matter of learning from my mistakes i guess and soldiering on. things will get better!

Yeah Kochy, if we haven't all made the same mistake........ It's a real balancing act between culling too hard (so you don't have enough backups) and culling to light (so you are carrying and using rubbish birds). A bit of trial and error and believe me I've seen some seasoned experts make the same too hard culling mistake!

thanks nubbly its a learning curve i guess. just an update, pair 4 was sitting on 11eggs all were clear including the 3eggs from the deceased grey green hen in pair 3. pair two never laid a single egg the cock is good to go because i had succesful rounds with him earlier this year with other hens, had similar problems with this hen last year. the replacement hen for pair three had four fertile eggs which i decided to move to pair four so that she could keep laying but the hen in pair four went rogue and gobbled the whole lot. a decidedly bad season so far, have decided to return the birds back to the aviary for a break before having another crack. hopefully ill have some better luck with the next round. will keep everyone posted on how i go but for now there is no progress. sorry
