Posted August 11, 201113 yr My violet male at night time has decided to kick the hen out and on looking in the nest box, before he hops out squarking like a 2 stroke motor, he is sitting either on or right up next to the 3 chicks. The chicks are all nearly feathered so it is not like they are little anymore. Anyone else seen this before? The hen looks all lonely and cold out in the breeding cage on a perch by herself.
August 11, 201113 yr The cock takes over feeding the chicks arounf 3 to 4 weeks of age. I have never had a Cock kick the hen out but i have had a hen kill the cock when he's tried to get in and feed.
August 11, 201113 yr I would remove the hen bird if I was you, just to be safe. As Daz mentioned the cock should be the sole feeder now, and the hen may decide she want's to nest now. Her job is done, best to move her to a holding cage to recover before going into the aviary.

If either one of the parents decides they want to start a second round, then the chicks could be in danger. With only the dad in there, that shouldn't be an issue.
August 12, 201113 yr Author Thanks for the advice. I will pull the hen out in the morning. She is a gentle, non biting lovely natured bird but I do not want her to go a second clutch.
