Posted August 10, 201113 yr Hi Hoping you might be able to help me work out what sex two of my budgies are.. not sure if my photo's are good enough... #1 Dash - Not sure what type she/he is either head, wings and body are all different colours and #2 Frilly - Albino I think? Thanks for your help Bel
August 10, 201113 yr It is always hard to tell with abinos but im thinking no one might be a male. however the photo isnt the best photo so not 100% sure.
August 10, 201113 yr The photos are a bit over exposed but they look both male to me. Both are young birds.
August 10, 201113 yr Agree with Daz, both male Its hard to tell the first ones type from this angle, but from what I see I'm going to say YF sky blue spangle. But I could be wrong because the photo is very bright. And yes the second one is an Albino
August 11, 201113 yr Author Thanks I've been told its better to have more hens then cocks, is this true?? if so I'll have to go hen hunting since it looks like I've only got 2 with 5 cocks...
August 11, 201113 yr yes as we all know females are more trouble then males.... It's best to have 2 to 1.
August 11, 201113 yr Author Even if I'm not planning to breed?? So in theory since I've got 5 boys I need a total of 10 hens??
August 11, 201113 yr Even if I'm not planning to breed?? If you arent breeding its irrelevant what sexes you have If you have no intentions of breeding get all boys. Edited August 11, 201113 yr by **KAZ**
August 21, 201113 yr yes as we all know females are more trouble then males.... It's best to have 2 to 1. I found this interesting. I had always thought it was important to have enough cocks to go around, so that the hens didn't fight with each other over who gets a cock. (And that the surplus cocks would buddy up with each other, as they aren't so particular.) But those of you with hundreds of birds would know how all that works out better than I would. ( I keep my hens and cocks separated when they're not breeding anyway, so it's a moot point for me. )
August 22, 201113 yr A good cock can service 3 or 4 hens at the same time. Place 4 hens in separate cages. In the morning place the cock in cage one. After lunch cage 2 next morning cage 3 and that afternoon cage 4. Next morning restart. All going well, (nothing evergoes totally to plan) you will have four clutches from the same cock. But remember to keep the cock fit.
August 22, 201113 yr For breeding purposes I always try and keep more hens than cocks but it doesn't always work that way. The general advice is 2 hens to one cock but that's in a exhibition stud with sexs separated other than at breeding time.

I get it.
