Would anyone mind giving me an opinion on quarantining a new budgie. I bought a budgie 2wks ago from a local breeder, and decided to get another. They were from different parents in an avery but when they left the nest they were kept in the same cage. The one i bought today wasnt out the nest 2weeks ago so they werent in the same cage, but have been in the cage with some of the first ones that were still left. I have just put the 2nd budgie in with the first since they came from same aviary and were in same little cage with mostly the same birds. Do you think this is that bad or should I have really kept them separate for a bit??

 

 

It wouldnt have hurt for you to separate them for about a month,

any sickness that one picked up while the other was away

will be transferred but in a short amount of time it should

be okay.

The rules for quarantine is the put the bird in a separate cage, at least 5 metres away from other birds, for about 30 days.

Moving house is stressful for birds, and this stress can bring out hidden ailments the bird might be carrying.

Don't be fooled by 'they were in the same cage' business though, I did.

 

I bought 3 birds from the pet shop at the exact same time. One of those mysteriously died while in quarantine but the others were fine.

Now the birds I got with that bird may of had some sort of resistance to it being in the same cage with the bird, or could of even had the same problem but it didn't arise.

However, if I had put them all in my aviary as soon as I got home, who knows what might of happened.

 

When doing quarantine, always say to yourself 'Better safe than sorry'

I look at it now like this, because I learned the hard way.

 

Spend 4-6 weeks quarantining new bird, and all will probably go well. OR spend 4-6 weeks or longer treating the whole flock with all the stress, time, late nights, loss of sleep from worrying yourself sick and cost of vet bills because you didnt quarantine the new bird. I will be going an extra step in the future and also getting the new birds vet checked carefully.

Hrm so the concensus is im naughty. oops. I only have the 2 budgies, not an aviary and if i had more or hadve got them from a petshop i wouldve been more wary and careful. I figured a small risk but not massive, so fingers crossed eh?!

Don't beat yourself up. In your case, I would have done the exact same thing. (Seeing as you didn't have other birds at home before.) You got them from a private breeder, and only two weeks apart. Same cage at the breeder's or not, if she had anything going on in her flock, you can just assume they would both have already been exposed.

 

In my opinion, which might not be popular, they are just little babies, and they would experience a lot less stress if they have each other for company.
