Posted August 8, 201113 yr Has any one in WA or perth started breeding yet, im not sure when to start. (of course ill start when my budgies are in condition just wondering about the weather.) Edited August 8, 201113 yr by Pride
August 8, 201113 yr lf they are inside a shed or somewhere where rain can't get them but he sun can, then it should be fine. However if its wet and your birds are exposed to it, l doubt they will breed and it make cause diseases.....as you can obvously seen i am a very novice breeder so don't take my opinions strongly lol Edited August 8, 201113 yr by budgerigarsherewecome
August 9, 201113 yr Author Thanks RIP, i have a small room that is adjacent to my house that we use as a games room, i could put them in there i guess.
August 10, 201113 yr Hi Pride I don't put mine down until September now. After many crappy attempts at winter breeding after being told that the first rains after Easter were THE time to breed budgies. Mind you we ARE a little cooler that Perth and that seems to have a bearing too. My birds always seem to have better results as it starts to warm up and then I go all the way through summer until March but we have a really shaded aviary. I think sometimes trial and error to find the best time for you and your birds is best. And I have a suspicion that different years bring different conditions which might alter the perfect breeding times too.
August 13, 201113 yr Author Yeah my avairy is also in the shade and i would like to start breeding inseptember, but im going to america in october so ill probably start in november, ill also be on school holidays near that time so that could be a bonus.
August 13, 201113 yr So, the timeline is................November you put them down to breed......say 1st November. Give them a week to ten days to first egg = 1 1/2 weeks add another ten days to produce 5 egg clutch ( approx) = 1 1/2 weeks incubation 18-21 days starting usually middle of egglaying = 3 wks Hatching to fledging = 4 to 6 wks so a total approximately of maybe 11 wks or so taking you into middle of January and breeding through the hot weather You need to plan now for relief from hot weather for any birds you will have breeding and hens and chicks in hot nestboxes.
August 13, 201113 yr Author I can put the breeding box inside as i have some space that is not a high traffic area, have them in shade and sunlight and as i will be on holidays i can put the airconditiong on or a fan near them.
August 23, 201113 yr Pride here is a quote of Kaz' from a different thread about ventilating nest boxes: Posted 03 October 2008 - 12:47 AMIf breeding through warm weather or in a warmer climate country its important to have ventilation holes. Nestboxes with chicks in build up heat in warmer weather and as the chicks grow. If you drill some 8-10 mm holes just a bit lower than the top perimeter that should suffice. How many and where depends on your nest box. In one like Daz'z design I would drill holes three each side on the blank sides and higher up. In summer, if there are babies in the nests and its warm weather, I usually lift the slider to the nestbox during the day and replace it with a piece of aviary mesh so the nestbox and chicks dont get too hot in there. I put the usual sliding door back on for the night time. And the link to where I found that: Drilling Ventilation Holes for Nestoboxes Here are a couple of other links to threads about breeding during the heat of summer. You could also do a search and find more, yourself. My link My link
August 23, 201113 yr Pride there is NO WAY I would breed between November - February, much to hot, When the birds get stressed from breeding and the heat you tend to get french moult. Edited August 23, 201113 yr by **KAZ** added a missed out word
